One of the places in Europe that I really want to see. I want to go to Europe as a high-school grad present but I think that they'll be in Stanley Park by then.

For those who have been:

What do you like about it?

And for Americans:

How does it differentiate from American sporting events? One reason I like football is because it has much better paegantry than American sports (college notwithstanding).

Young man you ask some very interesting questions.

Anfield is set in an area of late 19th to early 20th century terraced rowhouses. To American sensibilities it is a bit Dickensian. As one arrives up Walton Breck Road the stadium emerges from the neighborhood. In front of you is the Kop Stand and the Shankley statue with the logo "He gave the people what they wanted". The magic is begins there.

Walk around the side of the stadium on game day and you can pass the players entrance and walk through the "You'll Never Walk Alone" gate to the Hillsborough Memorial, where the flowers and gifts are fresh honoring those who never came back. Walk back out front to Walton Breck, and squeeze into the Alfred for a pint and and pre-game sing along. You'll have felt just a bit of the working class roots of our game and the special history of the Club.
Before entering the Stadium go over the street to the Hillsborough Justice office and make a contribution.

As you get ready to go into Anfield you'll notice, particularly if its your first English game, that arrangements are quite different from the States. Your ticket is for a set door way that has a turnstile which allows only a single customer to enter at a time. The steps lead you to your stand and there is no walking around from stand to stand. Your seat is either a home or away supporters seat and don't mix the two or you'll be asked to leave.

Now as you reach the top of the stairs there you are staring at the pitch. It's a lot closer than you imagined. You stand while waiting for the game to start. Since its been a long trip and you're a Yank tourist you get in way to early and you can't wait for the game to start. Perhaps the people around you will discover that you have come a long way and they'll be both surprised and proud that a Yank has come all this way to see LFC and that you actually know quite a lot about the team. Then, the speaker begins the tune and everyone stands and sings "when you walk through a storm hold your head up high" and the chills go straight up your spine. Hold your scarf in the air and try not to shed a tear while you sing.

And then the game starts ---and the real magic begins!

Spot on LB, couldn't have been said any better. The day I went to Anfield for the Wolves match last year was unbeleivable. Definitely a life changing experience. Just a great day. And if you go, try and go like the Friday before the match you're going to see, and take the stadium tour, it's worth the 8 pounds or so is costs. They take you through the museum with all of the League Cups, FA Cups, etc. and also through the players' entrance to the locker room. Like I said it was the best 2 days of my life, and I hope you get to go and experience it also.

Probably 'one' of the surprizes when you read LB's great discription was the "and squeeze into the Alfred for a pint" You're 18, you're an adult and resonsible for your life. A pub is not where you go to guzzle down a keg and pour the last pint on your head! "The Pub" is where you go for a beer with friends or to make friends a place to discuss any topic from football to politics and a place you can eat. (Regardless of comments on English food.. ) Not much room for that before the match tough and remember "What goes in has to come out" Getting up for a pee can be an experience in itself.

Hope you can make it before the change, it's not that expensive (Relatively speaking) You can always bunk in with Matt...!!!

I went last season. Spectacular. I'd do it again in a heartbeat (if I had the pesos.) PM me if you want any pointers, as I assembled the whole thing myself and am now quite familiar with area hotels, tourist traps, and the like.

Here are some pics from a trip I went on in Nov to Old Trafford to see the Manchester derby but I took the train to catch the Liverpool-Brum game at Anfield. Here are some of the pics. The Liverpool regulars may remember me or the story how I got in (had no ticket, BEGGED a gaurd to let us sneak in a halftime...and he let us. We found two empty seats right in the KOP and sat and watched the second half from there. I love Scousers.)

A couple of the pics make a REALLY nice wallpaper. They are too big to post in here though but check out the links. Liverpool really is a lovely city.

I included a pic of the Cathedral since it's so amazing.

The investment situation isn't progresssing well at all. Parry and Moores want an injection of cash without having to relinquish control of the club. Nobody (apart from Steve Morgan) wants a very small part of LFC without expecting so much in return.

The only way I still the stadium deal moving forward is if we sell every piece of it to a corporate sponsor. The naming rights as well as everything else. Whatever they want to do they are going to have to decide fairly quickly if they want to have the stadium ready for the 2007-08 season.

Liverpool Cathedral. It's amazing. Look at the pic. That is the Anglican Cathedral (The worlds longest) but Liverpool actually has two cathedal's the other is the Catholic one, better known as the Mersey Funnel or Paddy's Wigwam.
I googled mersy funnel for this pic. You can see the other at the back on the left.

I'm Catholic and we went to that one but honestly...it's ugly. We walked to the Anglican one and you can see in the pic the kind of day it was. The fog though just made the cathedral have a "magical" feeling to it. It's absolutely stunning to see. After we got home I downloaded a show from the BBC called "Pevsner's Cities" that was on Liverpool, it had a good section on each catherdral. I really did love Liverpool. It was honestly one of my favorite cities I've ever been to, and Anfield is just amazing to see in person.

And as the Scouse point out they are connected by a street named Hope. On the way between you can stop at the ornate Philharmonic Pub --- a hang out of John and Paul when at school. Indeed, John and Stu Sutcliffe had an apartment overlooking the Churh of England cathedral for a time.

Thanks, it was really funny to see. Made it hard to walk the street, I am still surprised I didn't get blindsided by a car at some point!

BTW - The Alfred rules...that pub kicked @ss and the people were awesome.
