I understand that my first thread was deleted because I made a mistake in setting the poll, so here is the fix.

Historically, Brazil and England are Argentina's greatest rivals. I (we) want to know which one do Argentine fans hold the most bitter rivalry against. Who would you prefer to face (and beat) on the final match of a World Cup? Please just Argentine fans voting in the poll.

Germany. They are the ones who beat Argentina in a recent WC final, you know...
Besides, they are the next WC host. There's nothing more beautiful, apart from winning a title, than beating the host.
Oh, and also, they're soooo overrated.

I mean, what have England done to us? They are just a bunch of arrogant pricks. Let them be. If we beat them, good, we put them in their place. But meh...

Brazil? Great, they won the Copa América final. We've already won 14 of those. Besides, I think that loss was an extra motivation for the guys who went to Athens and won the gold in such a magnificent way. BTW, the Brazilians didn't even qualify for that tournament, partly due to their loss to Argentina during the qualifiers. They'll just have to keep waiting for their first gold medal ever. That was sweet enough...

So yeah, Germany right now for me.

I would say Uruguay is historically our most bitter rival. They beat us in the first WC final, and I don't think they'll ever be good enough again to get in a position to let us pay them back in the same fashion. Although, I suppose eliminating them in 86 was sort of payback. As much as I hate it if we lose to Brazil, I hate more when we lose to Uruguay, because they enjoy so much to beat us, and because we know we should own them.

But Brazil is our bitter rival over England, definitely. They are our neighbors, and they are the five time world cup champions, so to be the best we have to beat them. I think Argentina is one of a few teams which can really consistently challenge Brazil. We just need to work on beating them consistently.

England became a big rival because of the malvinas and because of the controversial incidents which seem to happen when we play them at the World Cup. (Rattin, Maradona, Beckham). Obviously it is a team we really want to beat, but I think it is worse if we don't beat Brazil or Uruguay.

Big deal, we couldn't even beat Sweden, for heaven's sake! Besides, it was a first round loss. Not comparable with the final that Argentina lost to Germany in 1990, for instance... or the round of 16 in '98 where Argentina kicked some English butt. Seems like many brits are still really pissed about it. Isn't that cute...
Nah, we've got more important things to think about than some nation that doesn't even make the top 5...

I mean, what have England done to us?

You mean, besides trying to invade Buenos Aires twice, blockading the port several times to try to choke our economy, stealing the Malvinas and other South Atlantic islands and keeping a military presence there to this day?

Whoa, don't make the mistake of mixing sports and politics. With all due respect, it's a very lame thing to do.

Well, I can't say that Germany didn't deserve it. It was a horrible WC, a horrible final, and both teams played horrible - but Germany was definitely less horrible.

I'm really looking forward to the match next week.

Why does every thread involving Argentina and rivalries that includes Brazil get invaded by someone else (usually, Brits; this time, a German)?

Now, I dont want to make this a 1990 final discussion, but Germany was dominating Argentina the whole match. Argentina was practically only in its own half while Germany was running against this. But agreed the 1986 final was more exciting as a whole. Maybe the best ever.

Me too. :)

Maybe because germany was mentioned..
Now keep on being constructive.

Whoa right back. Where did that come from?

In this thread we are not discussing the actual game. We are discussing rivalries. Do you really think that, in the context of discussing the issue of rivalries, politics are not at all a factor? Do you think that the history of Anglo-Argentine relations has nothing to do with the England-Argentina football rivalry? I think that is a bit naive.

Aguante, let's be fair here. Argentina did not kick English ass at all in 1998 - in fairness, England did not kick Argentine ass either. The match was 2-2 when England scored a legal goal that the Danish referee wrongfully disallowed. It was a regrettable call, and you advanced on PKs - but that is history.

I don't mean to take away from Argentina's performance that day - I consider that one of the best matches of that World Cup; both sides played well. But if your team has one more player and the opponent, with 10, scores a legal goal that would've made it 3-2 - that is NO buttkicking.

I know all about that, which doesn't mean that I agree. You want to talk about naivety? How about thinking that a stupid football match is a way to "get back" at England for Malvinas? Kids were sent to die there for nothing, and all we can think of is getting even by winning a game? I don't see Paraguayans wanting to beat Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay with the Triple Alianza on their minds. Maybe we should grow up and start realizing that sports are about healthy competition and having fun. What does Malvinas have to do with that? Absolutely nothing.

What? Wrongfully disallowed? No way! You're talking about Campbell's header, right? If so, you might want to check it out again. If not, then my memory is failing me badly, cause I seriously can't remember any other goal being disallowed.

Anyway, I'm not praising Argentina's performance. Their playing was flawed not only during that match but during the whole tournament, I know. But they kicked England's butt out of that WC, just like Sweden kicked Argentina's butt out of '02. Period. I'm talking about the scores, not the actual performances.
