Tottenham have won the race to land Auxerre midfielder Teemu Tainio, with the Finn signing a pre-contract with the London giants.
Tainio has earned rave reviews during Auxerre's fine campaign and had been linked with a January move away from Ligue 1.
The Finn, though, scotched talk of a January departure recently by insisting he would give his all to Auxerre for the remainder of the season before heading out on a Bosman in the summer.
A host of clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, Rangers, Monaco and Werder Bremen were all credited with an interest in Tainio, but they have been beaten to the punch by Spurs.
The 25-year-old is relishing the prospect of moving to White Hart Lane in the summer.
"I am thrilled at the prospect of playing for Tottenham and in The Premiership," he told the club's website.
"It is one of the best leagues in the world. I look forward to joining everyone in July."
Spurs boss Martin Jol has been busy shaping his squad, having already brought in Mido, Mounir El Hamdaoui, David Limbersky and Emil Hallfredsson, and Tainio could prove to be the most astute capture of all.

Good news. he's had injuries in the past but he's very highly rated and versatile. Would be happier if he was joining us now though.

New players signing every day now. Is that another one for central midfield? I just hope we can afford this squad!

Frank says he can play anywhere in midfield. I love this squad we are building. We have let Redknapp go, & we have players like Ricketts, JJ, Bunjevcevic & Richards that may leave in the summer.

Our flexibility in letting him stay with Auxerre until the summer might be the reason we won out over what was apparently a lot of competition for his signature. That and probably money...

He's free, so is Radek Cerny, the Czech international, so is Mido, a small fee (£500k?) for Mounir El Hamdaoui so hopefully that means we'll still have cash for Routledge or SWP.

I'm confident Mido's going to be a good player for us given the chance. Never heard of Mounir El Hamdaoui so should be interesting to see how he gets on in the reserves for a few games

I think Mounir El Hamdaoui will be in the reserves basically all season. It will be hard to break into the 4 strikers we have unless one of them is injured then he might have a chance.

Apparently he can play on the wing, left or right, so if he's any good there he should get chances at some stage

I suppose he may get a chance especially as Ziegler is out & we dont have options on the left with JJ on loan & Ricketts injured

Hamdaoui has scored 11 in 14 games. I'mnot sure he'll be hanging around in the reserves for too long if he keeps that strike rate up!
