Excellent Joe, if a game is in Berlin, you're more then welcome to party/crash with us if you don't mind floor space.....

In case people are curious, this is what I rented:
http://www.ferienwohnung-zimmer-berlin.de/Unterkuenfte-eng/unterkunft.php?unr=654&

Also, here is a good site on Koln flats

http://www.wohnungen-e-rent.de/flats-Cologne.htm

And those are excellent links from Mikeymike15. I've used one to book a place in Cologne, now just need a few more people to fill out as some "friends" have dropped out as the money payment period begins. I found a place for 1200 Euro/month with 30% deposit. Otherwise, same conditions, payment upon arrival on June 9, 2006.

Hey Guys,

Probably a dumb question but the FIFA ticket site is too cryptic for me to understand exactly what's going on.
My understanding is that only TST's were for sale during this second phase of ticket sales. I don't care about following any specific team but wanted to just try to order tickets for matches based on specific cities and dates.

My question is....when does the 3rd phase start and can you attempt to order single game/date tickets during that phase?

Thanks.

I booked and have paid a 10% deposit for a flat in Berlin for three weeks. My deposit was 206 Euros which worked out to be roughly $245 dollars. I don't need to pay for the rest of the flat until 9-JUN-06 (day of the kickoff) and I can cancel outright on or before the 9-MAY-06. In my opinion, the $245 down payment is a no brainer of a sacrifice to ensure that I have $30 or less/night accomodations.

How does that work out to less than $30 per night? If your deposit of $245 was only 10%, that means your total cost is $2450 for 3 weeks. That comes out to over $115 per day.

Divide it by 5 people OR if we stay only 2 of those weeks and get 8 people to stay.....It's not like I'm renting an 8 person 3-bedroom flat and staying by myself.... ;)

We currently have 8 people who have submuitted payment for tickets and the flat...that number will fluctuate somewhat dependent on whether we can get tickets through normal channels at normal prices....

Hey, chin up! Keep your eye on the exchange rate! The value of the euro has been subtlely dropping vs the dollar and it may continue to fall lower.

***

on 3/11/05, it cost $1.34 to buy 1 euro. on 7/8/05, it cost only $1.19.

certainly moving in the right direction!

What's the best/most central part of Cologne to stay in? Looks like a lot of the places on this site are quite a ways out from the city center.

The main train station is just to the west of the river. That is the 'downtown'. What I think it most important though is proximity to public transportation. First preference would be walking distance to a train station (that goes intercity), second preference would be local transportation.

Here are two crucial web sites that will help:

http://www.kvb-koeln.de/german/fahrplan/linienplan.html
(Koln Public Transport Subway/Tram Map)

www.multimap.co.uk
(Most comprehensive mapping site, for local street maps, for Europe that I've seen.)

Thanks.... I totally agree about being close to the train station. I definitely don't want to deal with renting/driving a car when I'm there- I'm sure it would just be a huge pain in the azz more than anything else. Plus, I plan on being drunk a good portion of the time I'm there.

Are there any military people here taking a "hop" over to Germany? I was just thinking of doing that and I wanted to get some feedback on how convenient it would be. For those of you who don't know, as a miliatry member, especially if you're on an airforce base, you can ride in a military cargo plane for free that goes to almost any place we have an installation(that's called a 'hop'). I believe the base I fly into would be Ramstein.

From Randolff or Kelly in San Antonio you should probably be able to get a hop to Dover or Andrews on the east coast. You can usually catch a pretty regular flight to ramstein from there. Also, if you can get into Andrews it's about a 40 minute cab ride to BWI where there are contract flights just about daily to rhein mein.
