Got one more question guys...

I read somewhere that from all WC cities were pretty much about 6 hrs away from each other taking a train.

Any truth to that?

Is that's the case, I'm going to try to pick a central city and just take my 6 hr train ride to and from.

Thanks again.

I have USA TST-7s (scored on Aug. 23)

I bought the FIFA Accommodations package for the 1st round (via the FIFA web site). I will travel and be housed in the city where the US plays at least a day before, day of and day after the match. It may be a gamble... I may find myself in a hotel that charges by the hour... but what the hell.

It's a way to see Germany and not have to deal with mass Transit. If you've never been to Germany before (I spent a month there a few years ago), I might recommend this option. It's a beautiful country and... Contrary to popular belief... the trains do not always run on time.

Good luck.

Answer:

Berlin is the most remote city (six hours one way to Munich by train). Gelsenkirken, Dortmund, Cologne, Frankfurt, Kaiserslautern, Nuremberg, Stuttgart and Munich are in the same general area. If your situate yourself in a central location between them you would have train rides taking from one hour to four hours to eight cities. The rest of the cities (Hamburg, Hannover and Leipzig) are less remote than Berlin and less clustered than group of eight mentioned above.

Munich is about 5 hours from Cologne via train, so you might want strike it off your list.... I told my travel agent to stop looking for places in Munich because it's too far away from the other venues.

I'm about to jump on 4 tickets to the round of 16 game in Munich.

Using www.euroteam.info for getting the tickets (about $450 each for cat. 3).

Anyone see any pitfalls purchasing the tickets this way (not through FIFA)?

Should I do now (before draw on Dec. 9th) to avoid any jump in price if draw looks good for this game (1A v/s 2B)?

Any worries about the security imprinting on the tickets going this route?

Your help/advice would be much appreciated.

I've heard that they will be doing random checks at the gate (comparing passports to ticket info) If they don't match, you don't get it. This is what has kept me from getting tickets. FIFA clearly couldn't prevent scalpingso they might as well just give in this time round instead of punishing people who desperatly want to attend. I'm not going to spend $4K only to be turned away at the gate.

I was surprised and pleased to get the following e-mail response from US Soccer:

After the Final Draw on Friday, December 9, 2005, U.S. Soccer will know
the venues, opponents, and dates of the first three U.S. Group Matches.
At this time, we will also know the exact number of tickets that will
allocated to us in each price category for these matches. The number of
tickets that will be allocated to U.S. Soccer for the Round of 16 and
beyond will not be known until the venue for these matches is
confirmed. A space will be provided on the 2006 FIFA World Cup Ticket
order form for you to indicate that should the original price category
requested not be available, you authorize U.S. Soccer to process your
request with the next price category of tickets available.

I'll be surprised if they do this. I never heard of it happening in 2002 even thought it was threatened. Scalping seemed like business as usual to me.

FIFA said (in WC2002) that only the person printed on the tix was going to be able to get in. Not even once was I ever asked for another form of ID at the gate nor did I ever saw anybody else have to fork out an ID. People were selling tix outside the stadium, my buddy bought tix for the Poland game and Germany and was able to get in without a problem.

For FIFA to match your tix with your pass would require a LOT of manpower, I can be done but highly unprobable. But then again... I could be wrong

Blatter in this article makes first mention of "recognition scanners" but also mentions the part about id checks taking 4 hrs to get people in.

FIFA: Germans should be on 'red alert' for World Cup
Associated Press

LEIPZIG, Germany -- German authorities should be especially vigilant after recent fan violence, and world soccer chief Sepp Blatter wants a full inspection of all stadiums six months before the World Cup finals.

FIFA's president also called Monday for a rethinking of the ticket system and a ban on standing-only places at German venues.

"The red alert is on for Germany's World Cup committee," said Blatter, in Leipzig for Friday's World Cup draw.

Two players were pelted with objects thrown from the stands by fans during Saturday's Bundesliga matches, leaving one with blood streaming down his face.

Kaiserslautern's Fritz-Walter-Stadion, set to host five World Cup games, was closed Friday because of awning tears. In February, a steward was hit by falling pieces inside the arena, which is under renovation.

Blatter gave the Germans good marks for their overall preparations for the World Cup, but demanded a deadline from Germany's World Cup committee for the stadiums to be ready for soccer's showcase event.

"We will have a serious talk with them. Trust is good -- controls are better," Blatter said.

The FIFA boss also said Germany's strict controls on World Cup tickets should be rethought. Tickets are embedded with microchips and issued to individuals who will face new recognition scanners at the stadium turnstiles.

"They are a little too much the perfectionists," Blatter said of the Germans. "We still haven't found the optimal solution. If everyone has to show their papers, it will take four hours before spectators are in the stadium."

After Saturday's fan violence, Blatter called for a smoking ban at German stadiums, which would take cigarette lighters out of the hands of violent fans.

He also sought an abolishment of standing-room places at German stadiums, which is the case in England and for European matches. That might help Germany control fan violence, he said.

"At the standing areas, there is always movement. Sitting spectators are quieter," Blatter said.

I'm going to ask here too.

What if my wife nor I do not have our passports yet? I ordered tickets through FIFA in June and they accepted my driver's license & charged me, but the US soccer fed says they need a passport.

Should I just use my Driver's License again, or possibly my social???

I was wondering whether it would be a problem with the USSF that I am using the credit card of my grandfather. Obviously I did not think this would be a concern but when reading through the ticket information it said that the customer information must match the cardholder's name. I am a financially drained college student with only a 500 dollar max on my credit card so I planned on using my grandpas. The only way I see getting around this is the ticket holder name can be different. Right? Will this be a problem? Thanks for the insight.

I just realized that the group play of the US team will span 11 days. I may only be able to stay in Germany for 2 of our group matches. Will I be allowed to order tickets only for the first two or the last two group matches?

My dad's passport expired last month, so his renewal won't come for a couple of weeks. Does the passport number have to be current in order for the order to be processed? In other words, can I still use his passport to get a ticket, or will my order be denied because his passport is not current?

I am in the same situation as your father. I am hoping that it won't be a problem. I remember reading that Fifa will set up a website to swap tickets at face value so maybe we can switch the tickets between our old/new passports on the site.

There's a good post on an alternate thread (FIFA tickets - Ready, Set, Go) with instructions from USSF if old passport numbers are used. Just make sure to renew now to get the new number by Jan 30. The relevant post was made on or about Dec 9.
