He could be good for the Ticos. y parece que su familia esta contenta
I would have loved if my dad got a job in San Jose while I was young.

The Ticos are very nice but how will they feel about a coach from US. I know some Tico's feel that there team is as good as the US or even better than the US. Also as you mentioned the man has not coached since his disasterous World Cup experiance.

Why no MLS jobs?
efernandez9
28 Sep 2002, 10:53 PM
is only 10 jobs there
when they sack some one, the assistant coach takes over......notice that MLS is too poor to hire coaches with international profiles
examples: in tampa bay, Tim H out for Mondelo, mondelo out for assitant coach: peter Van der
fernando clavijo - revs from foxboro, replaced for a Britt - Nicol
with the crew is the same
coach for the burn is an assitant coach from the fire-chicago
quakes - 2 former mutiny players (one was assistant coach to Rongen -dc United)
the coach for DC united, before his job with the fussion, was a radio comentator for several years, the guy is a crazy fool from the NASL yrs.

I don't know in the 4 years since he lost his job with the USMNT team you would think that at least one MLS club would of hired him.

Looks like Sampson will be the new coach.

Sampson has even been passed over for high-profile college jobs here (UCLA, Stanford). In the English-speaking parts of the USA, the World Cup Finals are the only event in soccer. Because of his failure there, he is an untouchable in this country.
By contrast, Latin America pays attention to World Cup Qualifying and Copa America. They also had more realistic expectations for the USA in 1998. Thus it's not surprising that they have a lot more respect for him.

Well that first game against the USMNT will be weird for Sampson I imagaine. If he does a good job with Costa Rica and gets them to the 2006 world cup do you think the US would think about hiring him again? Could he at least get a job coaching college soccer?

I think we're actually cool about the whole thing, dont really mind the fact that he's from the US and i get the feeling that everyhone else, like me, like me and will welcome him.
It sux that guima is being such a pain in the ass about getting hired.

college is a large comitment for any coach, long contracts for good money, couple of yrs does not pay much.
he said during wc comments that 'he is waiting for the right oportunity' It really means money!
guima.....how much was the difference on salary, I heard that federation wanted him to work the under 23 and 20's....He just wanted to supervise as GM....with his asistant as the coach. He felt that he was being paid one ck for 3 differents jobs

costarica do you think if Guima does a 180 and accepts what the Federation is offering that the Costa Rican fed would hire him and blow off Sampson?

I think people might be mistaken on Sampson being passed over for coaching jobs... he stated publicly (multiple times) that he wasn't interested in coaching, and that he wanted to spend a lot of time with his family. So why would a team contact him about a job?
Apparently he's ended his self-exile. I wish him good luck in all but two games of the qualifying campaign :-)

This is simply incorrect. Sampson actively lobbied for the Stanford job last year. He gave the following quote to the San Jose Mercury News: "Stanford, to me, would be a perfect fit. I interviewed there last Wednesday and Thursday, and I thought it went very well," Sampson told the Mercury News.
After UCLA hired someone else this spring, he said, "I don't want to mince words here; I'm very disappointed with their decision."

Well I guess all things work out in the end. If Sampson had gotten either of the college jobs odds are he would not be fixing to be appointed the coach in Costa Rica today.

Al técnico Steve Sampson le faltó liderazgo y experiencia para imponer su criterio en el seleccionado estadounidense que fracasó en el Mundial de Francia 1998.
