Chelsea is having great success this season, and will continue to have as long as Mourinho will be manager in my opinion. But why does he succeed so much better than the other coaches? I think he is years ahead of any other coach, and these are the points where i think he gains his advantage:

* Perfect rotation of the players. Making each player (of an about 20 player group) feel usefull for the team, making a lot of minutes, plus keeping each player in his prime shape all season long.

* High pressure system - Chelsea starts pressuring the oposing team in their defense, with two defensive lines. Even if they can circle the ball through the first line, there is the 2nd defensive line. You dont see the ball without a Chelsea player running after it. This is achieved not by running more than the oposition, but by a much better and more advanced placement of the players in the field.

* Steel defense - Goals just dont happen. The pressure is so high in the midfield that the defense is far away from the goal and diminishes a lot the space to play of the oposition.

* Ruthless in corners, throw in's, etc - Every move is planed. Every player knows his place, his player to mark. In the atack there are some powerfull combinations that result in a lot of critical goals, special in the decisive times like the European Champions League.

* Motivational skills - Mourinho wasnt a football player, but studyed instead physical education and psicology aplyed to sports. He knows how to motivate his players. Also he knows how to make the other team nervous. His coments are not only arrogant, but have the intention of messing with the oposing teams, making them feel pressure in the game.
His players also respect him as no one. Indiscipline is not tolerated. Also when the players enter the pitch, they trust him 200%, they know the tactic is perfect and that they are going to win. This generates a circle of trust that is unshaken, and that generates even more trust.

* Talent finder - He always picks the right players for the right spots. Players like Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira, Maniche and others were bought from secundary portuguese clubs and turned into European level stars. In Chelsea, with the money he just picked the players he wanted for the style of play he intended. No stars like Figo, Zidane etc, but instead top 50/100 players that work their ass off for the team!

* Bring out the best of each player - Players grow with him. You can now see for instance Lampard, Robben, Terry and others shine more than they ever did. Even Joe Cole is becoming a good and a team player!

* Studying the oposing team like no one - He makes his players watch movies of the oposing team and explains every typical move they make. This is specially usefull for instance for Makelele. He always seems to be in the right spot. This will be even more usefull with the 10 point lead, so he can fully concentrate on analysing the Champions League oponents and find their weaknesses.

Good points there Kontra. He is great and fabulous coach and he has a brilliant future. I think the key to his success is discipline. He demands a lot from players, but it makes sense, even if at first, the player doesn't agree. Joe Cole is a good example. We do not see the "Bellamy-Souness" fiasco b/c players trust him and believe in him and that's what a great coach should have, the trust of his players. :)

What I like about the Joe Cole situation is that it seems he tells players why they are'nt/won't play, what they need to do to play and then if they make that effort and learn to do what he wants, they get a chance to prove themselves.

And then he stays with whats working and who he trusts, regardless of contract size, outside pressure etc.

I think this trust factor may have given some of the portuguese lads an early, perhaps a bit unfair, advantage, but not a permanent advantage. Many a manager are stubborn, have clear favorite, pressued by marketing, contract size, rather than open to a change of a favorite player to the teams detriment.

Jm has shown a bit of that with Tiago it seems, but when Smertin or Parker were/are healthy and learning what JM wanted they got the oppurtunity to earn a start ahead of Tiago, now Cole seems to be getting the shot now that he is finally playing focused and determined and more disciplaned position and defense.

I think we may find Carv. will now take a backseat to Gallas when healthy, as long as Terry/Gallas is working so well. The Kicker is that he needs to learn to trust Bridge to keep that pairing(as only Gallas is versitile enough to move over of the two), JM has said that he can not trust Bridge to keep back in position in big matches so its up to Bridge to develop that trust, but it is nice to feel the choice is up to Bridge, instead of it being a lost cause right off.

If a players knows what he needs to do to earn trust and time, and trusts that he will be given a chance to do so it really helps team morale, me thinks.

I beleive you, but I would like to see a link backing that up for arguments sake. Can you recall when exactly Mourinho has said this?

7:33:45 gmt on tuesday the... :D; geez you probaby question The Sun as well

It was a while/weeks ago, on SkySports news, I believe, JM was discussing upcoming team selection and said that he would likely use Gallas at lb for a certain matchup because he could be counted on to defend, cover and position well, ... and about Bridge, more or less, that the boy likes to go forward all the time and so is good to use him against teams more intersted in defending than pressing... that is good to go forward but must also learn when to go and when it is needed, importent to stay back and keep posiition...and that Bridge importent player to team, all players importent, many matchs to play etc....

No link, just an ageing memory so disregard if you like and don't use me as a confidential source if you are that rubbish writer from fox soccer :p
