Submitted for your enjoyment from Bluto_11: using an umbrella in the snow. Manly/not manly?

I vote "not manly", but then again we don't get all that much snow in these parts.

Of course, sarabella will show up here in a few minutes and turn this into some kind of "discuss your feelings" thread and ruin it again.. :p

NEVER manly, in fact, it throws you dangerously into "Little Old Granny" territory. A very timely topic, Coach, as it snowed here again yesterday. I didn't bother with an umbrella, just had on a hat, warm coat, scarf, etc. If I can tough it out, so can a more manly man. ;)

Besides, it's pointless, especially if it's blowing. You won't be kept that much more dry if you use one.

Thats why some jackets come with hoods. So my answer is no.

We get snow like once a year (should be coming anyday now..) but I have never seen a man use an umbrella in the snow.....that's would be so gay!

The guy would probably get jacked if he did...

I saw a woman using an umbrella last week in the snow last week. Given that was on the piste and she was dressed up in skiing gear she looked blooming silly. The umbrella wasn't particulary nice either. A man would have looked distincly un-manly.

Having that said, most skiers look pretty silly anyway, with their silly braces and one piece suits and bobble hats and ridiculous boots. Us boarders look amazingly cool of course! (esp. when we fall off chair lifts) ;)

This last bit is off topic off topic...

i just wear a hat, although an umbrella can be used in self-defense or for more nefarious matters, like the Penguin on Batman :p

You know on the night of the Arsenal Newcastle game it was pretty damned cold here in London. Wind chill factor was huge. Freezing so it was.

Arsenal squad all in long sleeve tops with gloves on, shivering as they stand on the side lines to be subbed.

Geordies all in short sleeve tops, with a definate attitude of "howay its sure warm down south eh lads"

I don't think it fits the manly/not manly dichotomy but rather the stupid/not stupid one.

I vote stupid. If you are out in a snowstorm, the snow is more likely to be blowing since it's lighter than rain drops and an umbrella won't help. Secondly, if it's snowing, it's pretty cold and the snow is not likely to melt right away, so you're not getting as wet. Now, I use an umbrella all the time when it is raining, again using the stupid/not stupid dichotomy. It's stupid to get wet when you can cover yourself, so I use the umbrella.

In short (too late, you say) it's stupid to use an umbrella for something for which it is not designed.

Well, what did you expect after asking us to "open up" and "share our feelings".

Not manly and too much of a hassle.

I don't even use an umbrella in the rain anymore unless I'm dressed up for meetings or formal events like weddings. I got accustomed to the rain after 4 years in Portland, OR. Nothing like constant rain and drizzle to make you sick of carrying an umbrella everywhere. Since then I always buy coats with hoods for the times when it is really coming down. In the summer, I'd rather get wet than carry an umbrella around.

Geez, we'll be using umbrellas in the snow next!

Definitely not manly and probably not very useful either. I grew up in Minnesota and other than an occasional old lady maybe, I don't recall seeing anyone use an umbrella for snow. Rain, yes. But as previously noted, snow will tend to blow if there's any wind, rendering the umbrella ineffective. If there's no wind, snow coming down is really rather pleasant and a plain winter hat will more than be enough protection to stay warm and dry.

Syracuse University class of 1994 representin'.

You don't use an umbrella. You might use your Arsenal hat and scarf. But the flayed skin of a Georgetown Hoya fan keeps the cold out like no other.

i must admit I did open my umbrella in the snow but did not use it two weeks ago. It was raining when I went to work in the morning so I had an umbrella and when I left it was half raining half snowing and when I stepped outside I opened the umbrella. I then realized that I looked like an idiot so I closed it just started walking. I did see a few other people using their umbrellas and I must say it looked strange.
