I'm starting this thread because I had intended on providing some thoughtful comments on Jermaine Pennant's situation but I don't feel like doing it on a thread that consists entirely of several pages of a Manu and a Chelsea fan arguing. Well, the Chelsea fan is arguning, the Manu fan is bleating like a dying sheep, but that's another story.

I think AW should do JP a favor and give him the boot (much like SAF did to Becks). The kid has talent but his head is clearly stuck firmly up his rear. He doesn't seem to have learned from his past debacles and the fact that he isn't getting any pitch time in a contract year doesn't seem to have woken him up.

He clearly isn't being helped on Arsenal's bench; if anything, much like another former youth-squad reject he probably feels that not playing gives him liscense to "enjoy" life a little more than his teammates.

I don't feel that players should be held to a higher moral standard than the general population in terms of keeping their employment. However, this seems to be a case where continuing his employment as an Arsenal player may be enabling him to keep his head up his rear.

In terms of what's best for JP and the club I think he should be sold or fired. He's had too many big personal screw-ups and too little on-pitch performances for the club to justify keeping him and he clearly isn't going toturn his attitude around if he stays.

Goodbye and good riddance.

Beat me to the punch. Maybe we can get a few million off of him.

And doesn't he look happy about it!

I remember watching Pennant play for the England kiddies and absolutely destroy fullbacks, in the way that Robben does now. But the top top top sportsmen are extremely commited and dedicated. THis also means they're not always they most exciting and people in the world because they are sooo single minded. Pennant may not have that extreme dedication to make it at Arsenal, but he must also be very frustrated, given his ultimate potential. Its very hard to break into the Arsenal 1st team, more so than Manu where Fergie gives chances to players who IMO are not good enough for them.Quick question, if we'd have got SWP 4 years ago, would he be playing for us now, or would he be languishing in the reserves? I'm not sure, yet now he's looking like an England starter...

I don't think he'll be back...

doubtful, as he is out of contract at the end of the season and thus would be a free transfer, assuming anyone wants him.

i wonder what percentage of his salary is being paid by Birmingham. that is the only "cost savings" I see for Arsenal :(

Astute, Miles. I think it's even worse for him when he sees his best friend starting for England and Arsenal and thinking, "Man, I used to roast him on the grounds at school all the time."

Clearly (at least to my blurry eyes) Pennant needs to be practicing every single day, and playing every single day--anything to keep his mind on soccer and not on the "amenities" of the sporting life. Unfortunately, I don't think he'll get the time or discipline at Brum, either. I think a better choice (for him) would be--I hate to say it--Bolton, or Newcastle. I don't think Steve Bruce will give him the discipline he needs. Who knows? He needs somebody to kick his arse every day.

Re SWP: he'd never have made it at Arsenal. He'd have been sitting behind Pires, Ljungberg, and Wiltord, and probably never grown. Remember just last year most Gunners didn't think he was good enough for our team. It's funny what playing every day does for a player...he says ironically.

Well, we're unloading part of his salary, and hopefully Edu's, so now we need to get some cover. As I see it, we've got Bobby, Freddie, and Reyes to play wide. Am I missing someone?

Van Persie and Clichy can play on the left wing; Lauren can play on the right.

Uh, please don't use the term "roast" when discussing young British players like Pennant. It could give some people the wrong idea. ;)

I think the exact same thing when i read "roast" in a football related concept.

Even with the discipline problems, i still hope he comes back to Leeds.

And of course, right after i post this i see that he has moved to Brum on loan.

Always the hope he'll join us on a free later, i guess :)

I think that move to Birmingham was purely coincidental.
We surely couldn't have arranged a loan that quickly. ;)
Sorry you missed out, have Ken Bates call Wenger and ask if Leeds can be placed higher up on the speed dial, in case something like this happens again.
Seriously though, i feel kinda bad for Pennant, he was probably still hung over when we put him on the bus to Birmingham. :D

Hell, maybe the reason he was drinking in the first place was because he was going on loan to Birmingham :D
