hi, everyone
my current coach is getting married so has asked my dad to take us for 2 weeks, im asking for him now :how should he cope with people that always 'mess about' and dont listen? how to build the fitness off the team in a short space of time? any ball work drills? and what to watch out for when picking a team?

note: my current coach hasnt realy done anything to help us of the above

Peer pressure is the best fix for your issues. If certain members of the squad are meesing around, make the entire team run. Soon enough those players not holding their own will start to.

this will also help with fitness, however if this is a soccer club theyu should already be fit. How old is your team and at what level do you play. Without knowing that info I cannot tell you what drills may be appropriate

How old are you ? Is it a u-8 team or a u-13 team or are you playing mens open? And what does bottom english division mean? Is this a select club team, do they travel on a national level or do you just play local clubs from your township?

Sounds like the league is about learning the game and having fun. Kids will be kids at 12 years old, fitness is something that will come. it is important to get the kids in shape wiothout them knowing they are doing it.

Incorporate as many drills as possible that have conditioning built into them.

Also, focus on ball handling skills, communication and awareness.

Have juggling competitions, Work on give and go combination plays, Work on proper technique when pasing shooting, etc.

From reading the whole thread, I am going under the assumption that this team is made of 12/13 year old boys. Even though it's Sunday's, I assume the kids have a real interest in being there. My advice:

Have the coach do what he can to add a second training session. During that session, make sure all the kids are constantly doing something (at least for the first few weeks). Do a warm-up drill that involves all players playing a game in an enclosed grid (ex. dribble tag, team knock-out, etc). This will get them warmed up for training as well as lots of early touches on the ball.

Next, incorporate some passing/trapping drills. There are many that do not involve kids in lines. Evolve into 1v1 and 2v2 drills/games (get some of the parents/older siblings to help out so everyone is involved). Next, go to 4v4, small field, using goalies (small goals). Last, have full field scrimmage. Start with some type of rule (two touch, 3 passes before shooting, etc.). For final 15 min, just let them play.

I find that kids are 'messing about' when they are bored. If they are always involved in drills, they don't have the time to do it. In the beginning, make sure to punish the whole team when kids don't listen. Personally, I don't like running because it wastes time (and some kids don't mind running). Do something like having the kids do 'down and ups' a few times (they drop to a prone position, rise up, and jump as high as they can - repeat 4 or 5 times).

Peer pressure and leg fatigue will quickly cure the problem kids. As a last resort, have kids who always mess around sit the bench on Sunday. Make sure they know why.

Lastly, for picking a side (assuming he's starting from scratch), begin by asking who likes to play where. Let them play those positions during scrimmages and make adjustments as necessary.

Good Luck. Let us know how they progress.
