Hey everybody,

I知 a football crazy college student living in the US that wishes that we had a magazine that covered European Football like all the ones you can find in England and the rest of Europe. I知 studying business and as part of my studies I知 researching whether it would be feasible for such a magazine to be started in the US. You are the people that are most likely interested, so I figured I would ask you for feedback. Below are a few questions, feel free to answer as many as you like. Thanks for your input!!!

1. Would you be interested in reading a magazine that covered the major European leagues?

2. How often would you prefer to receive it? Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Monthly

3. Would you actually pay for such a magazine?

4. How much would you pay if it were Weekly, Bi-Weekly, and Monthly?

5. Do you have any comments or things you would absolutely want to see in such a magazine.

Again, thanks for your input!!

Head to Barnes & Noble or Borders sometimes. They've got plenty of European, if not US based, Soccer magazines.

FourFourTwo, World Soccer, Champions, etc..

I relaize this, but Im trying to gauge whether people would be interested in recieving a magazine like 442, WS, etc right at their doorstep every week or month for $2-3 an issue, rather then paying $8-12 at Barnes and Noble or Borders. I realize that there is competition, so Im looking for your opinions on the questions I asked.

i would love a monthly on just european club football - just not one that's dominated by the english, spanish, and italian leagues. not that they're not the best leagues, or course - they are. but they are already quite accessable.

if one looks at world soccer, one gets a number of articles on various topics, then good-sized columns on the scenes in the big three mentioned above, and more columns - decreasing in length - that correlate to the decreasing prestige/quality of the league/nation* in question. they are followed by sections from the rest of the world - south america, asia, africa, north/central america, etc. and it's concluded by results and tables from all over.

i would love it if a magazine were designed around just the bold-faced portions described above, but with column space distributed far more equitably. getting two or three paragraphs on the portuguese superliga simply isn't enough. granted, a full page or two isn't necessary for the tinyest of eastern european leagues; but still, there is so much more information outside the biggest leagues - and having access to it in one source would be great.

*national game, of course, not the nation, itself.

It would be nice to get something in a $2-3 dollar price range. However, demographicly, I don't think EPL is really a big hit in Texas. We only have one MLS team and that's in Dallas despite the fact that Houston has a larger fan base and a new stadium which fills to capacity EVERY time Liga Mexicana has some teams in for exhibition play. They sold out Interliga on the first day! So get thee to a census burreau and find out more about your target market.

I agree. Buying the Euro mags is silly at the price they demand.

For me, I've got the internet for a lot of news and columnists for free. So the mag that I would consider perfect would street clear of covering too much of that type of basics. And it would cover the MLS more in the summer.

I used to get it for $2 an issue, but now it's $3.

What's more needed is magazines covering the U.S. soccer scene, or covering soccer globally with equal or special attention given to the U.S. soccer scene.

And soccer news (match reports, results, standings, etc.) in magazine format makes almost no sense with the internet and satellite providing instantaneous, real time news. It's less time-sensitive stuff that would work. More like FourFourTwo, less like World Soccer. Broad analysis, commentary, columns, human interest type pieces (for lack of a better term), interviews, etc.

Sounds like a good idea, but I would have to say no, i'm afraid.

reason being, that a U.S based mag for European football, would be like a U.K based mag for the NHL.

It could work, however, I can't imagine the U.S magazine being able to provide info and topics that have not already been released by the european press.

Plus, i'm a firm believer that if you're not in the environment, or absorbing the atmosphere, the transfer to text format would be quite in-effective.

Just an opinion though.

7-10 years ago I would have said yes. Today with the internet you are going to have a very tough time being successful pursuing this.

I agree with the guy who said we need a US based, and for the North American/South American market, magazine. Take the 'FourFourTwo' layout and focus on MLS, Mexico, Central and South America.

What is the history of Chivas? Who was Kyle Rote Jr.? What about features on women's game players? "The Boy's a Bit Special" articles on high school and college players.

Leave the youth coverage to SA and all of the regional USYSA mags.

Other possible articles:

"Fello Meza: the most famous Costa Rican you've never heard of."
"Argentina's Racing: From Riches to Rags to Riches"
"When will MLS Enter the Libertadores?"
"Surinam: What's in the Water?"

Columns:
"Futbol de Sol y Sambra"
"The Boys a Bit Special"
"BA: Answers your Coaching Questions"
"Captain Forever"

Start that magazine and I'll buy it. Don't forget to get Nike and adidas to pony up big bucks for interviews and photos featuring their contracted players decked out head-to-toe in swooshes or 3-stripes, respectively. Oh, or is that just a coincidence in 'FourFourTwo' ? ;)

Just my two cents. As this survey on BigSoccer is internet-based, you'll of course very often hear the argument that most users get their infos through the internet thus not having an urgent need for a printzine. If you get those people, that don't deal with www on a regular base (seniors or senior European immgrants that might still like football/soccer etc.), behind that idea, you will surely have a better chance of success.
