"Without Ken Bates there wouldn't have been a Chelsea remotely attractive to Roman Abramovich."

It'll definitely be strange to see Cuddly Ken at another club.

Ken may be exactly what they need to survive. Good luck to him (he'll need it).

Gianluca Vialli could be set for a return to English football as manager of Leeds according to The Sunday People newspaper.

"A couple of weeks ago Leeds had their head above water gasping for their next breath.

"Now they are on the surface swimming against the tide. The next job is to get them swimming with the tide." - Ken Bates ponticates

Captain (or "master") Ken Bates is in the dinghy .... oh and look, there on the horizon is a Russian geezer in a state-of-the-art warship

makes you think about that old joke...

How do you stop a Leeds fan from drowning?

Take your foot off his head :D

Well Bates has taken over at Leeds and seems determined to repeat the Chelsea experience. 50% of the funding is from mystery investors, he is going to set up a pitch owners scheme and there is even talk of Hotels.

So what do we think of it all? Leeds are one of our biggest rivals, did Bates really have Chelsea's blue blood in his veins? After all he did start off at Oldham.

Personally I was never a great Bates fan but that is probably because I was a Chelsea fan before he took over and resented the changes he made. I guess we should be greatful that he saved the club.

I know many people considered him a hero but I was always a Harding man when it came to choose between the two and I think that the Chelsea revival really took off under Hoddle with the help of Harding and the village only delayed matters.

I thought that the way he left Chelsea was a bit dubious but now that he has joined Leeds I think it has confirmed in my mind that it was just Business for him all the time.

opps just Seen Monkey's thread perhaps a kind moderator could do a mearge.

Couldn't agree more.
Initially, it took me a few days to stop laughing, i guess you'd have to be an older Chelsea fan to get the irony, still pmsl :D

Yes, Bates was in it for the business, he did do Chels a good turn, but as any of the longer bigsoccer members will remember, i posted many articles about his shady dealings.

I don't think he'll do to Leeds though, what he did at Chels, and probably won't get away with too many shenanigans, what with the spotlight now firmly fixed on them from the get go.

Plus, i think he's in it purely for the ego now.
He's not going to be walking this great Earth for very much longer, i can't see him setting up very many long range plans to benefit Leeds, only himself and his ego.

As is ever with Bates, when he comes to shake your hand, extend the weaker one and put the stronger one on your wallet!
