i think it shows that the foreign press association hasn't the foggiest friggin clue when it comes to quality TV
my awards:
Drama: CSI (i will admit to not having seen lost, deadwood or nip/tuck)
Comedy Series: duh... arrested development
Actor: jason bateman (AD) (edges out zach braff)
Actress: sarah chalke (scrubs)
Supporting Actor, Series/Miniseries/TV Movie: (tie) michael cera (AD) & bryan cranston (malcom in the middle)
Supporting Actress, Series/Miniseries/TV Movie: cheryl hines (curb your enthusiasm)
even their nominations were pretty crap... will and grace and sex in the city over scrubs and malcolm? no arrested development cast members besides bateman? no CSI mentions?

Well, here is where your opinions kind of go up in smoke. We all have "favorite" TV shows that we get to watch somewhat regularly. But you criticize the foreign press for not voting for some of the shows you think are best when you admit yourslef to not having seen three of the best dramas over the last year. In the end, I have seen a couple of episodes of CSI, I have seen a couple of episodes of lost (couldn't keep up with it regularly which hurts me following the show), I never really liked nip/tuck so much and have seen most all of deadwood. With regards to the nominees for "best", the first two episodes I saw of Lost were great. I just missed two more and every new episode somewhat relies in part on the previous weeks epsiode, so I haven't kept up. Though I never really liked Nip/Tuck, I can see why people do. It is very well acted and the writing is obviously dark at times. With regards to CSI (& Law and Order for that matter), I can't say that I think they are deserving of "best drama". 99/100 the episode is the same formula. 2 murders/crimes. CSI investigators go to the scene. Find weird, unexplainable piece of evidence. Go interview witnesses. Create theory of how crime happened. Be proven right when adding all the evidence together. Sure not every show is like that, but a damn huge percentage is like that. Its the same reason, I never really thought Law & Order deserved any "best drama" award. It is a great TV show. It is (on most days, like CSI) well written and well acted. But I wouldn't put any of the performances (whether it be writing or acting) as "outstanding", or "memorable" even. Though the actress on SVU that won is great in her role as a former abuse victim dealing with some horiffic scenes. The shows (CSI and Law & Order)are very solid, but not spectacular. I think a major problem is that there isn't enough "character development" in those shows, compared to more "storyline" shows like Lost/Deadwood.
With re: to actor nominations Ian McShane's acting job on deadwood wins hands down. Period. He has a fantastic character written for him and he plays that character brilliantly. Oh yeah and the show also says the word c-ocksucker about 100 times an episode. You just don't get those quality lines from CSI.

well... 1)i don't live in the US, 2)i pretty much shyed away from the dramataic acting categories for precisely that reason & 3)my disclaimer should have been an alert that MY opinion in that category needn't be taken seriously
... but i'd love to hear any opinions on my comedy category choices

Well, I've only watched a handful of Scrubs episodes but the ones I did watch were pretty funny. I've never seen Curb Your Enthusiasm (I don't have HBO) but I have heard great reviews about the show. Malcolm in the Middle in my mind isn't as funny as it has been previous years but its still a goood show to watch. However, I think Arrested Development should have won best Comedy/Musical series, without a doubt. That show is just gold and It's a shame that not more people watch. On a side note, I have converted some of my friends and they absolutely love the show. :)
