1. Terry McDERMOTT Liverpool v Spurs 2/9/78

The classic end-to-end goal. On a sunny September afternoon Liverpool destroyed a Spurs side boasting Argentine World Cup winners Ossie Ardiles and Ricardo Villa. Terry McDermott scored the magnificent seventh with a powerful header after an inch perfect cross from Steve Heighway. Defence to attack in under 10 seconds. No less an expert than Bob Paisley described it as "one of the best goals in the history of the club".

2. Graeme SOUNESS Liverpool v Manchester United 25/2/78

Has there ever been a better first goal for Liverpool? Manchester United the opposition and a thundering volley that nearly took the net with it. From then on Souey was assured cult player status with The Kop.

3. Kenny DALGLISH Liverpool v West Ham United 6/4/81

One of Kenny's personal favourite goals for Liverpool helps secure the club its first ever League Cup. It was typical Dalglish - a stretching volley from an impossible angle.

4. Ian RUSH Aston Villa v Liverpool 20/1/84

Liverpool's greatest ever goal scorer with arguably his greatest ever goal. In fact you could probably select any of the three he scored that night at Villa Park. In icy conditons he expertly brought a dropping ball under control and in the next movement delivered a sublime chip over the head of bemused keeper Nigel Spink.

5. John BARNES Liverpool v QPR 17/10/87

John Barnes announces his arrival as a Liverpool player by dancing his way through the QPR defence before finishing cooly past the hapless David Seaman.

6. John ALDRIDGE Liverpool v Arsenal 16/1/88

The ultimate team goal finished off by goal poacher supreme John Aldridge. Steve McMahon's role in the goal was pivotal. His never-say-die spirit almost took him into the crowd as he battled to keep the ball in play during the build-up.

7. Robbie FOWLER Liverpool v Aston Villa 3/3/96

An outrageous strike from 30 yards that scorched its way past Mark Bosnich into the net.

8. Steve McMANAMAN Celtic v Liverpool 16/9/97

Macca runs virtually the length of the pitch dribbling past an entire team before striking a curling, dipping shot from the edge of the box in a rousing UEFA Cup tie at Parkhead.

9. Michael OWEN Newcastle United v Liverpool 30/8/98

Fresh from his World Cup wonder goal against Argentina, 18-year-old Michael Owen recreates a similar effort up at St James Park. The fact that it completed his hat-trick underlines what a phenomenal talent he is.

10. Steven GERRARD Liverpool v Manchester United 31/3/01

An incredible strike by an incredible player. 35 yards out he unleashed a ferocious blockbuster of a shot that left Fabien Barthez groping thin air.

11. Stan Collymore Liverpool v Newcastle 03/04/96

No list of top Liverpool goals would be complete without the stunner from Collymore, who squeezed an audacious shot in at the near post in the dying seconds of the infamous 1st Liverpool 4 Newcastle 3 classic.

12. Gary McAllister Everton v Liverpool 16/04/01

Who could forget the free kick

Since I haven't been alive for three-quarters of those goals I'll keep my list down to the five best goals I have seen this season.

1. Mellor vs. Arsenal.

This goal simply needs no introduction. Every Liverpool fan will remember where they were when they saw this until the day they die. Kirkland sent the ball from the goal box and it deflected off of an Arsenal player (can't remember who) and Mellor curled it perfectly from 30 yards and victory on the game's final play.

2. Gerrard vs. Olympiakos

Again, no introduction. I couldn't see the game live but it is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Liverpool needed one more goal to win the game 3-1 and qualify for the knockout round of the CL based on goal differential (ahead of Olympiakos). In the 86th? minute Gerrard sent one of the hardest hit shots I have ever seen into the right corner of the net. The reaction from Gerrard and the fans just reaffirms why this is the world's greatest game. Could easily be considered number 1. I chose Mellor's because the shot had a greater difficulty.

3. Alonso vs. Charlton

A game that Liverpool dominated from the start. But Alonso's goal is amazing simply because of the precision it had. A ball that curled from right to left and landing just past the keeper's reach in the top right corner.

4. Alonso vs. Arsenal

This goal is amazing simply because of the passing skill and precision it required. A game that featured three goals, and all of them are some of the greatest I've seen.

5. Garcia vs. Norwich

It's unfair that Riise only got an assist credited on this goal because without a perfect forward-lob Garcia would never have been able to flick the ball beautifully over the goalkeeper.

Just my opinion.

The Alonso v Charlton goal is actually Garcia v Charlton. It was Garcia's awesome shot, not Alonso's.

Michael Owen's winning goal against Arsenal in the 2001 FA Cup has to be right up there as one of the best, if not most dramatic.

What about Riise's long range shot against Manure in, I think it was 2001? (Someone correct me if i'm wrong)

Good pick. Robbie Fowler's goal in the 2001 Worthington Cup was also very nice.

My bad, it's just that I remembered Alonso playing great in that game in place of Gerrard and thought he scored. However, you are right.
