The situation:

We have a 1st generation Ipod.
Our computer crashed and we ended up having to pretty much start over from scratch.
The original CD w/ the Ipod software is nowhere to be found.
The Ipod doesn't show up now on the tool bar or anywhere.
I downloaded Itunes to see if that would help.
It says that the Ipod needs to be re-formatted for use with Windows.
Reformatting it will delete everything on it (not too big a deal, all the songs are on the HD anyway), but I want to be sure that if I do, I can still get the Ipod software to get the songs back onto it.
Help please.
Bottom line is I just want to be able for my computer to see the Ipod so I can drag songs to it.
Thanks.

You can download the latest iPod firmware here: http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

I had to reformat my iPod earlier this year after it crashed. I was able to get stuff back on it. Guess this isn't quite the same thing, but I would assume if that worked, it would work for you since you have the songs on your HD anyway.

I downloaded that updater, but it doesn't give me the option to update, only to restore the factory settings.

Your best bet is the iPod mini which retails for $250 but you can find deals - you can look here for deals: http://dealmac.com/categories/144.html

And the Apple Store sells refurbished versions of older models for a lot cheaper: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=SpecialDeals&siteID=NKa3hZyYoHA-jZ8LE3rAag5Qe2fYRpiR8g
They don't have any iPods on sale right now, but I'd keep an eye out.

When you reformatted it, did it put the original software on your computer?
I don't have the CD with it anymore.
