According to soccertv.com, ESPN has sold *all* quarter and semifinal matches to Setena closed circuit!!!!!
So after the round of 16, ESPN 2 will not show anymore CL matches until the final in May :(
I hope ollie has his facts wrong! or ESPN had a change of heart!

Actullay after re-reading Oliver's email it looks like they will show at least 1 possibly 2 QF matches. But no Semis at all is still outrageous!
Here is his quote off his email:
"ESPN International has sublicensed English-language US TV
rights to ALL UEFA Champions League matches not aired
on ESPN2 (including 6 quarterfinal matches and 2 semifinal matches)
to Setanta Sports for broadcast on the Setanta Channel."

6 of 8 quarters
2 of 4 semis

They're still showing one game per matchday

It's in the contract to show a game a matchday.

Scooze me, but there are FOUR quarterfinal matches TOTAL, (that's why they're called "quarterfinals", eh?), and TWO semifinal matches, so whoever originated this bit of "news" is either a numerical twit or is BS'ing.

Sounds like for the average CL-starved viewer the only difference is that we at home will only get 1 semifinal match. Last year we got both.

Raise your glass to the day when ESPN's rights expire. Hopefully in my lifetime.

Oh, and to the poster right above, Setanta is in pubs only for CL coverage. No home PPV package available. Not this season, anyway.

It's disgusting the European football coverage stateside.

There are 2 legs to each of your "matches", so multiply your number by 2 and the article begins to make sense.

I've got nearly 500 channels on my satelite from all over the world and I won't get any more than one Champions League match per match day.

Do you think European football is only represented by the Champions League?

La Liga, Serie A, Premiership, Bundesliga, la Championatt, 1a Liga, UEFA Cup, European Championship quals and World Cup quals, not to mention league games from Greece, Turkey, Scotland, Romania, Israel, and in the past, Russian, Serbian, Macedonian, Polish, etc. There are at least 15-20 games per week available...

How many of these have you watched? or do you think these games do not qualify as European football? only Champions League counts?

I mean, name me a country outside of UEFA that has that kind of extensive coverage. Even Southeast Asia, where ESPN Asia carries a lot of Champions League, does not have that kind of extensive coverage for the domestic leagues in Europe...

Jesus wept!

On another, but related point, why is there such a fasination with the Cl.
Don't most of you find that they are, for the most part, and especially in the first games of the knockout rounds, the most boring games on the telly?

I mean, really, 'playing not to lose' is the order of the day - regardless of which country the team hails from!

If I had GolTV, I'd never complain about football coverage in the states.
Besides, how many people here CAN watch the CL games live? They're on at 2:30 (or 1:30, 12:30 and 11:30) on weekdays. When I was a student, sure. But now I have one of them job things, and I can't just decide to pop over to a bar twice a week to watch a football game. (Unless one of the British partners is in town.)

But do not forget Tivo! And, in the states, it is pretty easy to get all the way home and not find out the result...

In that case, you can go to the bar just as easily after work, for me, and watch the game. Most places replay them. Most of the complaints are for LIVE CL games.
