I have been both a girls and boys JV coach over the last 10 years. This year due to the pregnancy of the GV coach, I have been enlisted with the duty of coaching the team. I am really looking forward to it. I'm gonna use this thread to document the ups and downs of our season. Our tryouts start Jan 24 so it is getting close. I get to coach a 9th grade girl who I have known since she was in 3rd grade. I knew early on that she was gonna be a good one. She is in the regional pool for her age group which is rare for somebody from Alabama. Wish me luck!

Good luck :)
I met with my new JV coach yesterday. He has no playing experience and he has coached JV boys two years at his old school in Texas. I guess I'll be giving him lots of tips.

Good luck pvann 4. Will you still coach club level too?

I have in the past and it is extremely difficult on me physically and on my wife emotionally. I don't know yet if I will or not.
Less than one week to go. I am excited about the start of the season but I am displeased with the way the higher ups have handled some issues. My new JV coach will be absent EVERY Wednesday. Mixing the JV and Varsity is not really a good idea because of the talent gap. But I guess that is what I'll have to do. Or maybe give the JVers some individual work while I am practicing the varsity. Who knows?

Good luck, I coach Travel hockey at the 13-14 year old level. A few years back I did both Club and High School and vowed never to do it again.
I'm mentally taxed out and I'm not even married.

You could set up a season-long 4 v. 4 mini-tournament among the JV players. Great for fitness, lot's of touches, players get used to each other. Make it competitive so they'll play hard (maybe a prize could be the top team of 4 suits up with the varsity for a home game).

Today was my lucky day. HHS hired an additional coach who happens to work at the elem school with me. She played collegiately at B'ham Southern. She has never coached before but I can help her with that.
Your idea sounds good too though.

Hello,
I am the head coach of the girls program at Birmingham Groves Highschool in Birmingham Michigan. I also coach club at the same time. I will first say that during the soccer season, my wife must come to all of my games or she will not see me.
In response to your issues with the coaching staff, I have these suggestions. Whatever you do make sure that you and the asst coach as well as the JV coach are presenting a unified front. In my case I have a JV coach and a Freshmen team coach. I find it very important to have weekly staff meetings as well as to make sure that my staff has the same views on soccer that I do.
It sounds like you have a good fit in your assit. coach. Since the two of you are teachers at the elementary level you probally have some of the same life experiences.
With both your players and your coaches, let them know up front what you expect from them. Also let them know what they can expect from you.
Good luck on your season, I look forward to your updates.
I've already had a parent call me about his daughter(a freshman). Telling me how athletic she is and how she needs pushing.

I Have my team captains and the President of the booster club handle all inquires until after the teams are selected, then and only then will I talk to the parents.

Once the season starts, I tell the players that all playing time questions must come from them and not parents. If a player is concerned about playing time I wanna hear it from them.
