What happens now? If you're B.A., do you resign in anger?

Bruce Arena really is caught in the middle of a bad situation. He's paid by the USSF so he has to show up, but on the other hand he has to work with the players when this is all over. Could he resign out of principle? Sure, but that very principled action might make him both unemployed and unemployable. The more time passes, the more desperate the United States' position becomes, but I'm guessing Arena will bite his lip until the blood trickles out of the corners of his mouth. If he has to coach a bunch of scrubs, he'll do it.

Relax. The whole thing will be settled soon. The amounts of money involved are so small this is a real tempest in a teapot kind of thing.

I was the one a couple of weeks ago that wrote that deadlines are good because it gets people off their assess, blah, blah. But that's not stopping me from getting riled up over labor wars concerning a sports league that's still in its formative stages. That's what's disappointing.
I guess the fact that we have labor wars could be a sign that soccer has arrived here, at least I hope.....

PA is a joke - mediation means crap. It is non-binding and a mediator can come up with the ideal solution but the two sides need to agree to it - which obviously they can't do.
The PA should just take the binding arbitration as it only runs until '06 so if they get screwed they are only stuck with the deal for a year and a half. God damn lawyers.

and the USSF isn't guilty for the same things you are saying about the players. The USSF wants it done quickly while the players would like it a little longer. The players are trying to help the future of the sport in a long term contract till the end of 2010. That's two World Cup cycles. US Soccer wants it done till then end of this current cycle for the Germany World Cup.
If there is going to be arbitration on the paper, but their will be no arbitration once the players agree to what the USSF demands due to their take it or leave it attitude as well as once the players sign or agree to the USSF demands there will be no form of arbitration and the players will be at the mercy of the USSF once again.
US Soccer has to understand now, this isn't for S**ts & Giggles anymore. A-League & USISL are no longer something to just bring a deck chair and watch from a distance with a martini in one hand and chompping on a biscuit in the other. The MLS is producing solid American players. These players are ready for the World Stage. World Cup Qualfying and hopefully making the World Cup.
I'm hoping the USSF sees the light and stops being so stubbern. Get this damned thing over with and let's get the camp open again.

from the foxsports article linked above:
Under the old contract, 25 players earned $200,543 each at the 2002 World Cup. For World Cup qualifiers, players receive a minimum of $2,000 per game and up to $6,000. Players make $2,000 to $5,150 for exhibitions, depending on the opponent and the result.
given the $$$ involved it seems like they could ask Tiger Woods for some loose change (or Nike) and solve this fairly easily

Wrong.
The players are trying to help their wallet at the expense of the sport and fans.
The players getting too much money for the national team games is good for them and bad for younger players. This will mean fewer games because the USSF will have to be more worried about making money than previously. The games will be against teams and in places where the fed can make money (i.e. Mexico in LA ). There will be fewer opportunities for younger players to get noticed by higher paying leagues.
It is bad for the fans because they may have to pay more to see games, there will be fewer games to see and the games will be in more hostile environments.

Any sympathy I had for SocFed certainly went up the flue when they spammed me today with an email blaming the players for being locked out. It'd be nice if they could try sitting down and coming to an agreement - the players gave them 2 years basically for free and would still come in to camp again if they were allowed to.
Of course, I don't know how you could negotiate "in good faith" with such soccer/business stallwarts as the USSF anyway (today's quote "the MNT brought in $1.1 million last year" - of course that doesn't include ANY sponsor dollars generated by a successful WCQ/WC run so it's basically a pretend figure).

so, basically the players don't want to contribute to the growth of soccer in US because the money that they generated will be ( and has been ) used by USSF exactly for the improvement of this growing popularity sport here. ( i guess :o ).

How broadly was this spam sent?
I thought I was on the "ussoccerfan" list thing they have.
Also a registered ref, but I have not seen any such emails.
Can you post it?

Yes, SocFed spends all it's money on "improving the game" - they never use all the money with the wisdom of a banana republic dictator to pad their own nests
As for the email, I realized after I had angrily deleted it that it should've been posted - it came of what I thought was the ussoccer.com email list. I think that's separate from the soccerfan list because I get duplicate emails on some. Usually those emails are on the website as press releases, but not this one.
