I can deal with this one a little better than I can the overall top 10 of 2004 that I posted the other day. Two I own, a few more I've considered purchasing, one on the must buy or borrow list.

01. Loretta Lynn
Has anyone heard this album? I keep seeing it popping up on "best of" lists and am becoming curious about it. But I'm afraid it's something that critics love for it odd pairing more than the music. So, I'm hoping to hear about it from a regular music fan rather than a critic. Anyone listening to it these days?

I haven't heard it yet, but an aquaintance of mine says its awesome. I trust his musical tastes about 98% There's very little we disagree on.

What, no Arcade Fire? How can you have a music critics' top ten list of 2004 without The Arcade Fire? How? Where's the humanity, Amazon.com staff?

I have it. At first it was interesting, musically.
...but then you start listening to the lyrics and it just gets ridiculous. They are so I'm down and out, I'm a poor redneck, can't afford shoes, blah, blah blah.
They struck me as humurous at first but then ya gotta start to think that Loretta Lynn has been RICH AS HELL, for what, the past 35-40 yrs?! I don't know exactly when she hit it big, but I find some rich rock star constantly singing these I'm so poor blue collar themed tunes a bit insulting. They are so over the top and cartoonish. It still beats the rest of the country crowd, just feels a little bit like a put on.

Loretta Lynn, I've never heard of, but sounds like a country/folk singer.

What is she supposed to do, flash gold chains and sing about her 21 cadillacs or something? or worse yet, sing what all the Nashville pop-country folks sing about. Are you annoyed that Johnny Cash sang down-and-out songs even though I'm sure he was financially secure for his last 35-40 or so years? The essense of country music is the poor, nitty-gritty, down-and-out life. Anything else, is the hairband-ification of country music.
I have the album, and I think it's great (I had it on my top 10 2004), though I haven't listened to it in a while. Maybe get a couple songs from I-tunes and see if you like it, to those who are curious.

You've never heard of the coal miner's daughter? You nailed it when you said country.
I'm proud to be a coal miner's daughter...

I'd rather listen to Modest Mouse than anything else. So there. In fact, I'll go put on Building Something Out of Nothing right now.
Oh, and I like the Loretta Lynn album, but it wasn't the best album of the year. I think Pinback, Arcade Fire, and Of Montreal were better, and they are not even on the list.
I'd probably go with Iron&Wine for #1.

Why Of Montreal isn't making more top 10 lists than it is I will never know.
