I think Donovan is without a doubt, THE most overrated player on these boards. What makes you think he ll play more at Leverkusen? They have Berbatov, one of Europe s top strikers and the best thing to come out of Bulgaria since Stoichkov, Franca, who is also a top striker on his day, and Voronin who has proved to be a big hit this year. I doubt that Donovan will gain a starting spot here, especially after Mathis, a similar hope for America, went behind Stendel, Stajner and Christiansen at Hannover.

Whatever, a great player is a great player the world around. Donovan has shined at every level he has been at from the youth teams in the US, to the U-17 WC, to San JOse, to Japorea 2002, to captianing the United States in WCQ.....this is just the next chapter of what will surely be a great carreer. He has nothing to PROVE to anyone on these boards or in Europe...as they say he will let his game speak for himself.

For you pesimist doubters there is a clearance sale on crow pie isle 12.

Sure he does. Why did he balk at going back to Germany after WC02? If he has nothing to prove than he would have gone. Look I hope he does well as the next guy, but to think he is going to just walk in and start right away is a complete joke.

At Academy, we offer Reality Checks at the lowest price around.

Do you really think be "balked" because he didn't think he could play at that level...after scoring 3 goals in the World Cup..(yes i know its offically 2 but come on the Portugal game should have been his). I think he puts more weight on his personal lfe and happiness that "proving himself" to pundits and idoit fans like us.

I have benn to the Academy and bought your Reality Checks....but they all seemed to have bounced.

PS.

Happy ********ing New Year.

Yes he balked and kept putting off the return to Europe. Happiness and playing time aside, he has a contract to fulfill. Putting off the return to Europe makes him look weak.

Don't you have this backwards? If he thought he had something to prove, he would have gone to Europe to compete at the highest level ASAP. He doesn't think he does have anything to prove. So he did what he wanted. He stayed.

The GM of Leverkusen, you know someone who is smart, rich, and actually knowledgable about soccer, unlike you, said that Landon will play 70% to 80% of the time.

I smell sockpuppet, yet you spell crap as cr ap to avoid the censor. I've changed my opinion you are just an idiot.

Boy are you guys lucky that Xabi Alonso got hurt. How many of these players have won a golden ball at a FIFA U-17 tournament, over Adriano and Kaka, won two domestic titles, scored more than once in a world cup, gotten capped over 50 times and scored over 15 goals for a top 20 national team, been named by their top 20 Fed player of the year more than once, and captained a top 20 national team all before turning 23?

Dear Bayer fans,

Get ready for numerous threads just like this one as soon as all the Landon fanboys get here. Oh, and be prepared for a tidal wave of uninformed rage should Donovan not play the entire 90 minutes of every single game...

Could be. We certainly rate him more highly than do you.

I doubt that Donovan will gain a starting spot here, especially after Mathis, a similar hope for America, went behind Stendel, Stajner and Christiansen at Hannover.

Unfortunately, Mathis couldn't actually play by the time that he went to Germany. He was good in 2000-02, but by the time Hannover picked him up he had been crap at club & country level for 2 years.

You Europeans seem uncommonly fond of the strategy of picking up guys who are struggling in MLS, then hoping that they will improve in your leagues. We appreciate the suggestion that a U.S. reject will be useful to you but it nevertheless seems an unwise approach.

Landon will be fine. He can play anywhere. I mean, you're not exactly terrifying us with your quality, because we see your German strikers every week on Fox Sports World. Hoo boy.

Besides Henry and Del Piero for there NT, I also think this guy is the most overrated on this board and any other board that speaks of US futebol... err i mean soccer.

I mean he is a decent player I give him that, and he has some moments that may seem great but do you all believe he would crack any top 5 teams roster or top 10 for that matter? I know at least from a Timao perspective he wouldnt even be on the bench.

I also understand I am gonna get linched because of this and I can honsetly say I dont watch as much MLS as you all do but then I just cant tollerate that much garbage ball in an afternoon.

I cant wait till he starts playing in Bayer and hope he actually makes the starting 11 one day, then I can see what kind of player he really is. It is easy to shine amoungst mediocre players but not when you have more talent around you.He will have his day and hopefully he can prove me wrong, well for all your sakes anyways.

It is easy to shine amoungst mediocre players but not when you have more talent around you.

Actually, Landon is the opposite. He doesn't look like much when he's playing with mediocre players, in part because his game is about combination play and in part because he gets bored. He looks best when his teammates and the competition is good.

He's the only U.S. player who plays fast enough (i.e., not foot speed but speed of thought) to be on a world-class club team. Honesty, I think once that he gets to know his teammates, some of them will need to catch up to his game, not vice versa.

Ricardo my man, and all the other "he's no good, my guy is better crowd" Landon is a soccer/football player. He's obviously got game to be at Bayer. He's playing a game he loves and making some descent coin doing it. That's all. Relax and enjoy the show. If he does well, most of us will be happy. If he doesn't, he'll at least have tried. No more, no less. It's not life or death
If only most were as reasonable as you...

Some of us are simply sick and tired of having Landon shoved down our throats. There are plenty of comparable players in other leagues and the smart thing to do is to simply shut up until said player has actually attained the status of an international star.

After reading the touching story of Landon helping his gf and her family I've realized one thing. I don't really have a huge dislike for Landon himself (despite some immature comments about Germany) - no, I just ********ing hate his fans...

hehehehe maybe they should stick with baseball
i doubt that hell make the 1st team not against the likes of schneider etc who play in a complete different league i mean this guy is 23 and so far only played in the mls if he would be really good he wouldve played cl at the age of 18teen already he now probably has only 5-6 years left before he starts to decline
