This is more a question of value to your favorite team than who you think was the best player. As an example, if you were a Real Madrid fan you would probably want an elite defender like Paulo Maldini in his prime.
I'm an Arsenal fan and I would have loved to have seen Franz Beckenbauer play for the Gunners today. Try to keep it to 1 position.

with beckenbauer in our defence along with sol i think it would be awesome
plus a few extra goals never hurt

I'd stick DiStefano in place of Smertin/Tiago for Chelsea. Or Pele for Drogba. Really, name a great player of the past, and you can't go wrong.

I would love Eric van der Luer in his prime in the Roda JC side today. exactly the type of player they need now, and not that far out of reach, I think

As a manchester United fan Cantona would not be bad:)
But most likely a midfielder like Best or Robson to shore things up there takes priority.
