showing up the coach only seconds after hopping off the bench to score a winner – an act that never plays well in Germany.

”I had a lot of adrenaline going,” he recalled. “The only people I apologized to was my teammates for not running up to them after the goal was scored.”

”I don't regret what I did - He wouldn't listen to me any other way, so I sent a message that way.”

”He said that it wasn't a problem what I did on the field, and to me, that's being dishonest,” Mathis continued. “That's the only reason that he had, any sort of reason, to take me out of the game.”

”It wasn't because I wasn't playing well.”

Clint simply won't take responsibility for his behavior. He'll come into Salt Lake, play well for a while, get tired and justify his lack of effort by blaming his coach and his teammates. The first key to watch for is when he stops making horizonal or angled runs off the ball. Then the trouble will begin. My only question is how long will that take. If the season doesn't go well, I give it to about the all-star game.

I thought he sounded pretty forthright last night on FFF. He said he knew he wasn't in Leinen's plans last summer and it just didn't work out, that he did have other Euro options and that he came home because he'd vowed to play for Ellinger if he ever got a pro job. It might all be self-serving BS, but it sounded legit. It can all go bad with Ellinger, too, but it does sound like they're tight, that Cletus thinks he's a coach who understands him, and that he's wanted to play for him since the 1997 WUG.

Clint Mathis. What a waste. What an irresponsible, lazy jerk.
