I know MLS isn't considered great but still for the United States that's a 60 position difference between the national team ranking (11th) and the league ranking.

I'm thinking this is a hoax.

There is nothing on the FIFA site about this, and they usually announce such things with big fanfare. Nor do they have a history of such rankings, which I think they would try to avoid givrn the politics. Seeing Peru as number 10 and seeing the mispelling of Holland makes me think he made it all up himself. I note that an independent woman's soccer site did a similiar ranking of leagues, and this may have been his inspiration.

Good one on us (it is human nature to accept such things especially if it feeds persecution complex), I think, by the HONDUGOL newbie, good way to irritate los yanquis!

The rankings are real but they are not from FIFA but from IFFHS.

Well I just lost any respect I had for the so-called International Federation of History and Statisitcs. The MLS is supposedly 71, just one above India, because of the performance of the MLS internationally, in the opening round of 8 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup (and clubs from league that didn't even make the last 8 got more points because of easy qualifying wins!) where the MLS teams did especially bad last year. Other than Costa Rica, how can you compare the performances of the other Central American clubs and say the MLS comes off as worse?

from http://www.iffhs.de/

"The classification of the best leagues of the world is made objectively without any out side influence of any sort. We follow the criteria that the level of performance of a league is reflected by the best classified teams of that league who in turn usually represent their country in international club competitions. If one looks at the football power-houses of the world, one notices that regularly 4 or 5 clubs of their leagues are always competing in con tinental competitions. By adding the points won in all competitions by the five best placed clubs of each league, we have the points for the country which in turn helps to establish a fair classification. It is important to note that only the yearly classification is representative, since all competitions move along the whole season and over twelve months, we have an objective view of the best. This system has been used since 1991, and it is recognized today as the most precise in rating the leagues of the world."

What a load of hooey!!!

The problem here is that the FIFA rankings come from games between teams in different leagues. The only time that MLS teams play other leagues in a meaningful way is the CONCACAF Champions Cup--a preseason event that most teams don't seem to take very seriously. Meanwhile, there are are other Central American cup competitions that the US doesn't participate in but which build up points for those leagues. Pay this no heed. It means nothing.

Keep in mind:
- the top teams in MLS aren't much better than the bottom.
- the only international competitions that MLS teams have competed in are the CONCACAF competitions, where they've played home games in Costa Rica and lost as many as they've won. MLS teams' away records are miserable.
- MLS is a very new league - incomparison to most any other soccer nation.

So what, we're improving. Consider where we were in 1995!

Costa Rica as the 31st league in the world does not sound bad at all. I feel that the 71st position for the yankee league is bull.sh.it, they are really underrated, but i do consider that they are the 3rd league of Concacaf, guatemalan league should be over the salvadorian league also.

I also think that Mexican League is far better than Peru League. No disrespect to anyone. Just my personal opinion.

Peru's clubs just had an exceptional year in the Libertadores Cup (good for them), which skewered the rankings, but that is the fault of the ridiculous ranking formula. Those numbed nachoed wankers should get real.

I think this is BS! Guatemala has the best league in CA I think Mexico is the only one thats better in concacaf then Guatemala and Costa rica after that MLS and Honduras. I think MLS shouldnt be 71. I see the MLS taking over in the future, they have the economical advantage and stadiums.Saludos!!
Viva Guatemala!!
