I was wondering what your take is on the the name for our team and the Washington Nationals? Lately, I've been hearing alot of sports guys and other people calling the new baseball team "D.C. Nationals". I personally hate that alot of people are starting to call the baseball team D.C. Nationals. I feel like its an infringement on D.C. United. I love our team name. By far the best name in MLS. I can't stand baseball and would hate for them to pickup that nickname. There is only ONE D.C. team here in Washington and that is D.C. United!! Baseball should stick to their own name: Washington Gnationals. Leave the D.C. only for our beloved United.

Am I making to big of a deal on this or do any of you mind that people are starting to refer the new baseball team as the D.C. Nationals???

My take is they're the Washington Nationals, and always will be.

Here's an article from today's Post that starts with The Washington Nationals announced their spring training schedule...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A48539-2005Jan4.html

Here's their official website:
http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/index.jsp?c_id=was

I figure most people will just call them "The Nationals", like "The Wizards" or "The Capitals".

You don't call United "The United". I'm curious....where'd we get the United from....did we rip off United from Manchester United or something like that?

I won't be able to sleep unless I get the answer... :D

I'm not sure where we got the "United" part from, but I sure do love it. I think it was KP's idea. He wanted a traditional name like most of the clubs in the EPL. Sure beat names like the KC Wizards and the L.A. Galaxy. What horrible names!!! :p

Yeah as most of you have heard, it's possible the Wizards is from Dorothy being from Kansas in the Wizard of Oz. The Galaxy is from the stars in Hollywood.

I'm glad it seems we just copied a generic name from a great EPL team. DC United is kinda like the Manchester United of MLS-the most loved and hated, and the most accomplished

Well, DC United got its name from the merger of the North Capital Soccer Club 02 and Georgetown Thursday back in 1996 as they decided to leave the now defunct regional 1st Division East league to move to the national league of Major League Soccer. It is rumored that Kevin Payne convinced both teams to join together under the name DC United during a fishing expedition on the Chesapeake Bay (as I understand it, the only fishing equipment on board were concrete sinkers with holes about the size of the club owner's feet).

:D

As for the Washington Nationals, I doubt I will think about them at all so their name is irrelevant to me... :)

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to revelation again.

There is some "official" reason for the name somewhere but here's what I think really happened:

KP was looking over all the possible name choices and thinking to himself, "this is all crap" and was in a bit of a bind because he had to fly to NY the next day to go meet with Doug Logan about the final decision on the team name. Resigned to having to select from a bad set of choices KP went about the task of booking a flight from DC to NYC and called his travel agent for tickets and the conversation went like this.

KP: Get me a ticket from DC to New York, I've got United Airlines Frequent Flier miles so I'd like to fly on them.

Agent: Ok (pause while looking it up) I've got you on a DC United flight 2962 from Reagan to New York..

KP: WAIT! Say that again!

Agent: Say what?

KP: What you JUST said!! (excited)

Agent: I've got you on a DC United...

KP: YES THAT'S IT!

Agent: What?!?

KP: DC United!!!

Agent: Okaaaay...

There was a fan poll done back when MLS was being established. DC fans were asked to choose between 3 options, one was United, another was Wizards (the NBA team was still the Bullets) and one other option which I've forgotten. I don't think the vote was binding rather it was probably a way for the team's marketing dept to gin up support for the upcoming team.

I remember voting for Wizards.

BTW, "Crackers" has been used as a name for a professional sports team and it was used for it's racial connotation, not in spite of it. There was at one time a minor league Atlanta Crackers baseball team and a Negro League "Black Crackers" franchise!

I only know this because I read about it in a catalog for replica baseball jerseys about 10 years ago.

You guys should care about the Nationals. Why? Cause girls like going to baseball games. Buy her a ticket, a hot dog, and a coke (or whatever she wants) and you're set

Abe Pollin didn't like the name Bullets, it had negative connotations. So he decided to name it after the KKK. The choice was fixed from the beginning-it was Pollin's favorite-the other 2 choices were "Sea Dogs" I think and some other ridiculous name

I'm out, enough posts for 1 thread.

I think it's just a matter of clarification needed by MLB, and I am sure once the season starts the Washington Nats will stick. the DC Nats just doesn't sound as nice.

Doesn't matter, they'll be renamed when they move to the new stadium anyway. MLB threw the name and ugly logo out there to sell swag. The new owners will change the name, assuming anyone in the area is even interested in buying the team......

Well, I have many views on this thread:

1) DC Nationals may stick, because of the LCD rule: Lowest Common Denominator. I have actually had people ask me where in Washington STATE I lived. Yes, I live in Northern Virginia, just outside of WASHINGTON STATE. Remember: people are idiots.

2) Washington Nationals is going to be plastered everywhere; on the uniforms, on the stadium; hell, even on the 'Washington National' and Krusty the Clown officially licensed mouspad. Maybe it won't stick.

3) Who cares?
