At MLSNet, Greg Lalas' latest column. He talks of New Year's resolutions--which are mostly about what we're going to STOP doing. Instead he argues for resolutions that involve what we should START doing.

#1 on his list is this:

"D.C. United -- This year, we're adding a new trophy case, a big one with lots of space for more MLS Cups. Because face it, we're everyone's daddy in this league. We're the Cowboys, the Yankees, the Lakers. We're the kid you love to hate, that annoying know-it-all jerk who somehow got the good looks and the bad girls. But, like Colonel Jessup said, you don't want us in your stadium, you need us in your stadium."

haha now even Lalas is on DCU's nuts. could you guys just let somebody else win one? 'cause if you win another then even Palace might have to convert from FC Dallas and that would just shift the balance of power too greatly. SOUNDERS MLS CHAMPIONS IN 2007! biggest test this year is gonna be the Fire in the East, i can feel it if their striker stable is healthy.

You remind me of a guy I met at a New Year's party. He was complaining how Washington never wins any titles in any sport. Then I pointed out that DC United won the MLS Cup, and he said "but they always win that. It's like a rule or something. They're the NY Yankees of soccer."

So that's at least one non-soccer fan's perspective of MLS.

I told him he was just about right.

And just to show how aligned the planets are, after Lalas talking about how we're "everyone's daddy", today's Wash. Post has an article in the Style section about the use of the phrase "who's your daddy" and it's various connotations as well as integration into the mainstream usage.

New tagline?

I was thinking the same thing.

"You don't want us in your stadium, you need us in your stadium."

There is no "going to" about it. I was by just before x-mas and the last two cups are on the bottom and off to the side. They are not focal points like the 96 & 97 are. It definitely had the look of too much stuff for too little room.

All in all, a good problem to have going into '05 :D

I third this motion! And I'm sure Lalas would love to have it attributed to him.
