The LA Times article was disturbing until I read the last line: Grahame L. Jones

Bring it on... it's going to be a great rivalry.

I like this:

...Now, I would be the last to suggest there's something underhanded going on, but there are those who will wonder if there's something a little extra in the deal for elected officials who play ball....

Goodness me.....politicians......underhanded......something extra........a deal.....My word. What IS he on about?

The LA Times article was disturbing until I read the last line:

Bring it on... it's going to be a great rivalry. The fact that Jones will be Xenophobes USA's biggest English-language cheerleader does nothing to dispell the opinion that they are an "American soccer team for people who hate American soccer".

But when they get torched by United on Opening Day (a la Miami in '98), it'll be fun to watch the lamentations of their women, etc...

i don't hate the idea of chivas usa, but i do hate the team's management due to their arrogance and posturing.

In 1991 and 1992, [Martin Vasquez] played 10 games with the Mexican national team under coaches César Luis Menotti and Manuel Lapuente. . . . In 1996 and 1997, Vásquez played seven matches, all as a starter, in the midfield of Steve Sampson’s U.S. national team.

Someone want to fill me in on how this was possible?

i have no idea the truth in what they said

but as long as the first didn't involed a competition (world cup anything, gold cup, copa america, etc.)... the guy can play for another country... if he has citizenship

That's right. The Sun Cup (or was it Shell Cup) wasn't a FIFA sanctioned official competition, so Chris was able to later play for the USMNT (though it was touch and go for a while). Diego Gutierrez had similar difficulties because he played on Columbia's U-17s, I think it was. So maybe Vasquez could have played in friendlies?
