I took my friend Brittany to the indoor soccer center here in Tucson a few weeks back and now she's hooked. She's going to be doing an internship in DC starting in a couple of weeks. Any suggestions about where she should go?

Its a great place, they also have a stage for live shows (mostly punk/ska/etc). About 20-25 minutes from DC

Where in DC? There are three facilities in NoVa, Springfield (Fairfax Sportsplex), Manassas (Sports Network), and Herndon/Sterling (Dulles Sportsplex).

I don't know about DC proper.

Is there a fat guy soccer league? I'd love to play, but I'd rather not play with people who know what they're doing and are in shape.

And please no EPL jokes. :D

Let's see -
Germantown there are 2 indoor fields at the soccer complex
Rockville (North of Gude-near Sunny Gardens rest.) never played there
Waldorf (off of post office road)
Jessup (Soccerdome)
South Balt (Meyers - just north of Glen Burnie)
North of Baltimore (in the city) - haven't played there in 10-12 years
Westminister - never played there

Did they re-open? I thought they shut down two years ago when they lost the lease.

Is she a student? Most of the area colleges have intramural indoor leagues.

Dulles Sportsplex is by far the best of all three. Has three full size "turf grass" fields. Springfield's fields (2) are small (one is a square) and the surface is terrible on your knees. Manassas only has the one field and way out in Bumfu*k.

Plus Dulles Sportsplex has Mens (3 nights and 3 levels), Womens, Coed, and over 30 divisions. Snack bar with beer sales. What more do you need?

Token fat guys are welcome!!

That can be a double-edged sword. I used to referee at the old Corner Kick, and on Friday nights teams would start showing up at 6PM for a 10PM game. Not fun - there would be at least one bench-clearing brawl every Friday. I stopped taking Friday night assignments.

The Rockville place is great. It has fieldturf instead of astroturf.

The balls plays like grass and you can wear cleats.

Springfield's fields (2) are small (one is a square) and the surface is terrible on your knees. Springfields surface is the same as at Dulles, they put in FieldTurf a while ago. The fields are still way to small and the refs suck more than usual. I have bad knees and ankles and played at Springfield to fill in on a team and the surface is fine. It's not the right surface for such small fields, but that's a different matter.

I play at the Soccer Dome in Jessup, MD, about 40 minutes north of DC (east of Columbia by about 5 miles). This is a pretty new venue, which replaced the Volleyball House in Columbia a few years back. It's not huge--2 large fields, one of which has boards--and a "little-kids" field too. The fields are the nice surface, not like concrete which those of us who played at the Volleyball House remember.

I play in the "Soccer Dads" division, which definitely has representation from the "old, fat-guy" contingent!

Depening on where she will live if she lives closer to Baltimore/Annapolis for rent sake, the Baltimore indoor scene is GREAT.

Total Sports Pavillion is reopened in Woodbridge. I know that's a ways out, but someone mentioned Sports Network in Manassas (where I play--horribly, but they haven't kicked me off the team yet. ;) )

Lots of great places to play, but you'll need a way to find a team rather than hang out and hope to get picked up. Try www.playerlists.com. It's a service for matching players and teams and has a lot of activity in DC area.

That's a great resource! Wihs I'd known about it earlier. Thanks.

However, I have found that if you really know where you want to play (location can be a real factor, what with travel time and whatnot), then showing up and waiting will usually pay off--just have your checkbook handy so you can pay! Generally, at least one team has a couple of slackers who quit coming and never coughed up their share, leaving the team with an unpaid balance. If your friend is ready and willing to pay the difference, they'll usually be happy to take her (depends on how competitive the league, I suppose--I'm a 'B' league guy, myself. ;) )
