well, yeah it was the name of the firm, but regardless it was born out of defiance

Thats not the way it was explained to me by Spurs fans back in the 70's.

Some of my dads friends were Spurs fans, i asked one day what the whole "yid" thing was about- being a nipper and all i was truly puzzled.

"They" explained that it was Spurs fans themselves that coined the phrase "yid' as quite a few of the hardcore jews that went to Tottenham games in the 30's refused to speak to anybody but their own and when doing so would spreak only yiddish - hence the other spurs fans around them coined the term "the yids" and "the yid army"
Over time it became directly linked to Spurs fans - and your firm of the late 60's and 70's didn't invent the term, they just copied it and "re-invented" it if you will.

I never found any reason not to believe that story from then untill this present day.

well...possibly. it's one of those things that just evolves like any slang term or whatever..the exact origins can't be proven. the fact is we've always had a lot of jewish fans, so we ended up calling ourselves yids/getting called that, who knows what came first. that's the thing about football culture, everyone has a different story. but its true that its become a term for spurs fans in general now and there's not really anything anti-semitic about other fans using it...how the hell did we get from "arsenal everbody hates you" to this!!???

As long as it isn't in the case of "gas the yids" talk.

i have no reason to believe an arsenal fan would make it up..see also fever pitch, where nick hornby mentions "obscene and unforgiveable anti-semitic chanting" from arsenal fans.
That was between 15 and 35 years ago. Things have changed greatly over that period.

BTW - I never said he made it up did I? I never said it didn't happen.

henry can suck whatever i decide to put in his mouth and feel privileged to do that.
You may be a homosexual but Henry is not. Perhaps you should keep your disgusting sexual preferences off of this board.

Arf ... a Roma fan criticising other teams for being flaky chokers.

ROMA HAVE NEVER WON IT AND NEVER WILL!!

ROMA HAVE NEVER WON IT AND NEVER WILL!!

ROMA HAVE NEVER WON IT AND NEVER WILL!!

But they did get to the Final, which is more than can be said for a certain other 'Best Team in the World (my arse!)'

Either good sarcasm or sheer ignorance... you make your own minds up.Oops! Apologies to Joe E on this one! I meant to quote:

But neither of those two are the greatest player in the world at the moment. Those supporters should feel privileged to be in the same football ground as Henry.

Again, sorry about that Joe E... viewing multiple windows at once is not a good idea:).

Okay its a given, I hate Arsenal. It's not jealousy, because I hated them when they were crap. *(Jumhed turns misty-eyed, murmuring 'Those were happier times'*)

But who I really hate are those wankers in charge of Spurs for the past 15 years, who have let a club with the same budget, groundsize and fanbase as the Arse whither away into a pale shadow of the club it once was.

Spurs have the potential to be just as successful as Arse are now, and now at last have taken a step in the right direction by firing Bleat and releasing the old and knackered. Except Redknapp. Weird one that.

With the right management in place and the right leadership, Spurs will be on the way up. Only time will tell.

Hey, at least you agree with Wenger, then! He mentions all the time that sperzz should be just as competitive as Arsenal, seeing as how both clubs are generally the same in revenues, etc. Of course, having a plan and following it, plus having someone who can actually recognize talent doesn't hurt, either.

Well with Mr PSV, Trappatoni coming after Euro 2004 and 15 million+ to purchase new players (possibly Van Bommel), the future is indeed looking orange...

Although I was watching Skysports the other day and the Spurs fans were whining on about a return to the glory years again. I wish they'd shut up. It tempts fate and gives Arse fans a chuckle and yet more amunition...

Heh! The glory days are back! Champions League next year! :)

Only if you purchase tickets to Highbury (or Stamford Bridge - or - Old Trafford - or even 'gasp' - Anfield) ;)

He was having a giraffe, silly!

Winston said 'the Spurs fans were whining on about a return to the glory years again. I wish they'd shut up. It tempts fate and gives Arse fans a chuckle and yet more amunition...'

He then deliberately negated this sentence in a totally self-deprecating manner by adding, 'Heh! The glory days are back! Champions League next year!' Thereby associating himself in a jokey way with fellow Yid whiners.
