Boumsong cost 8 million and we signed him to a 5 and 1/2 year deal. He won't be able to play in the UEFA Cup though. Hope he solves our defensive woes.

Nothing like all the pressure of righting the ship and saving the domestic season heaped upon the new guy's shoulders. Hope he can carry the load.

Best wishes for a happy new year to all.

i think he will be up to the task. he is a great player and experienced.

this is a great buy for newcastle. if they can get one more good/great signing then they could definitely be on their way back to the top. i know beattie would a very good player, but are the forwards newcastle's biggest concern now? what about a holding/defensive mid and a left mid?

I have to say I'm really glad to see this too. With Boumsong and Babayaro we are making a couple of signings that will probably help out with at least a couple of our major problems. As for the pressure, well, all I can say is that he can take solace in knowing that no matter how he performs our defense can't get any worse. The only way to go is up.

Anything to take the mantle off of Bramble's shoulders.

I agree the holding midfield role is more important at this particular point but Beattie is available now and the need will be there at close season.

As to the holding midfielder, I wonder if Chelsea would be interested in loaning Scott Parker? Tho slight, he's tough as nails. He made a great team with Matt Holland at the start of last year and maybe he could do the same with Jenas. He definitely needs some playing time and he won't be getting it with Chelsea.

Any idea how long Butt will be out?
Still like to check out Senegal's squad ...

assuming boumsong plays well, if babayaro plays well, there is an adequate replacement for lauren, and newcastle get a good holding/dmid, then they could be a very good team.

i think the holding/dmid would be easy, but good left mids are hard to find.

newcastle should buy jerko leko!

Scott Parker's out for about three months with a broken toe.

As for Nicky Butt, he's out for another three weeks. Souness addresses the defensive midfielder problem in that article, but he doesn't specifically name anyone he wants to bring in.

Alright mel me auld mucker?

Hows you and the little one?

I never, ever, gave that big lug of a sweaty any marks for being smart as a manager, but, i've got to say, he's done the biz with these two signings.

Hoping youse finish above the scousers in the end ;)

The second half of the season should get better. I bet Everton's arse will drop. They'll just be thinking. Yes. Avoided relegation and it's not even January yet.

Alright, I wasn't thrilled with the Souness hire, but at least he's got the good sense to plug the holes.

We are fine attacking. Some of Englands best managers have tried to plug our defence. But failed. Lets hope Souness can finally do it. We have got Birmingham today and i cant be arsed to go. Me. Not going to St James' Park on match day. :D :D :D :D Honestly. I can not believe it aswell. But hey ho.

Souness has only won one game since he arrived .Souness and bryan robson are the worst performing managers in english football.

Uh...he's won quite a few in the UEFA Cup, one in the Carling Cup, and five or six in the Premiership. That's a bit more than one if my calculations are correct.

Sou wants Boum to boom (http://skysports.planetfootball.com/list.asp?hlid=247447&CPID=8&CLID=4&lid=&title=Sou+wants+Boum+to+boom&channel=Premiership)

Souness believes that Jean-Alain Boumsong could be a future Newcastle captain.
