View Full Version : Who should be Argentina's #9?

Aguante Bielsa

These are the results of a recent poll run by "Olé" in which they ask who Argentina's main FW should be:

13262 voters
.............................................
Carlos Tevez (3437)
25.8%

Luciano Figueroa (2899)
21.9%

Fernando Cavenaghi (2838)
21.4%

Javier Saviola (2487)
18.8%

Hernán Crespo (1601)
12.1%
.............................................

What do you think? I personally like the idea of a Figueroa - Tevez tandem, in which Figueroa acts as the classic #9 while Tevez does the job of support striker.

It's hard to say. I think all five players mentioned are capable of doing well with the team, so it depends on who is on fire at the time.

Tevez or Saviola can be the withdrawn forwards, and Figueroa or Crespo the centerforward. I'd put those four on the roster, and watch them practice before making a final consideration on who starts. I don't know how Cavenaghi is doing in Russia, but if I was the coach I'd keep a close eye on his development too. Then I'd add a winger like Rosales or Chelito to play wide, and, along with Aimar or Riquelme as offensive mids, we got a killer forward line.

BTW: Aguante Bielsa? You must be a contrarian.

:D No, no. Aguante Perkerman, too. It's just my humble tribute to our greatest coach in the last 20+ years, who sadly didn't get all the recognition he deserved among Argentine fans.

I think Bielsa was a decent coach. He did well with Velez, and for them most part got good results with the Nationals. But he failed at the critical times. He did a horrible job at the WC. It is not possible not to have your team ready to play against England of all people. I give credit to England on that game, because they were fired up. But Argentina came out flat.

I like Bielsa's style, because he attacks and he pressures. But you cannot live and die with one style alone. You have to have variations depending on who you play and how the match goes. Bielsa wants the team to always play the same, regardless of who he calls, who they are playing, and how the match is going. When they need a change of tactics, he cannot deliver, as we saw at the WC.
