Two notes from Football Rumors (http://www.football-rumours.com/)

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness is closing in on his first transfer window signing after identifying Chelsea full-back Celestine Babayaro as a target. The Magpies are looking to bolster their defence when the market opens in January and the Nigeria international - a survivor of the Ruud Gullit era at Stamford Bridge - could make a move north within days. It is understood negotiations have reached an advanced stage, with the full-back's Chelsea contract due to expire at the end of the season. Middlesbrough and Liverpool are believed to have been trailing the 26-year-old, who arrived in England in a £2.25m switch from Anderlecht in June 1997.

Rangers are unlikely to have the cash to move for £2.5m-rated Belgian striker Thomas Buffel after Graeme Souness insisted he will not be making a third bid for Jean-Alain Boumsong. The Newcastle manager confirmed he has made two offers for the France international defender - an £8m bid is still on the table. The hard-up Ibrox club have slapped a £10m price tag on Boumsong but Souness has warned he will walk away from the deal and is already in talks with an alternative target.

Babyaro? Jeez. I'd almost rather Bramble... UnF'ing belivable how bad this team has gotten, and how quickly. Mel is right, shoulda kept SBR.

Thx,

Jay!

I am shocked by this. I really thought Souness was going to go after Huth, unsettle him and make Chelsea sell him. I don't think they would get him any other way than to offer him the first team football he won't get at Chelsea.

But to go after Babayaro! You've got to be kidding. He's crap. You CAN NOT start a backline that includes both Baba and Bramble.

My God. I would feel so bad for the Toon Army. Especially Mel_B. He might go jump off a bridge! Don't do it buddy, if so we wouldn't be able to hang out when you come to the States this summer!

I saw some rumours about Beattie and Morientes. Do you guys think you need them? I tend to think NUFC's problem is defensive more than anything. What do you guys think? I mean, I know Bellamy has been playing on the right but with Shearer (when healthy again) and Kluivert. Do you really need another starting caliber forward? (Though, this is a dumb question coming from a Chelsea fan...)

Going after Babayaro just shows me that Souness has had it with Bernard. I personally wouldn't think that Babayaro is a big improvement over Bernard but that's not the real problem.

We need to get a strong steady central defender back there who can clean up all the messes left by Bramble, Bernard, O'Brien, Hughes, Carr & Elliott (Taylor hopefully will improve as he's only 18). With a steady competent partner, O'Brien can do the job and the fullbacks will have more confidence. Given probably can be persuaded to stay as well. Where is this Campbell/Terry/Ferdinand type we need?

Huth is not the answer. He'll just cause more problems back there.

If Nicky Butt is going to be injured most of the time, we are going to need to find a stronger defensive presence in the midfield as well. Love to see Pape Bouba Diop go north. Maybe we should look to see what young Senegalese holding midfielder is ready to step forward?

As to upfront, I'd sure like to get Beattie if he's at a reasonable price range. Shearer will be gone next season. Bellamy could self destruct at any time. Kluivert may be out the door. Why not Beattie? Trouble is, Villa & Everton are probably thinking the same thing.

Hope so. The french twat. We need Beattie though. First and foremost. Need a replacement for Big Al as soon as possible. Lets analyze the facts. We wont get relegated. Honestly. Big Al is gone next season. The youngsters that performed so well under Sir Bobby Robson are not performing. Simple as that.

Is he a twat because he is French, or is the French part just incidental.

I would be able to take your criticisms of Robert more seriously if he weren't always labelled French this and French that. Is Robert's purported laziness due to his Frenchness?

Reguarding the rest of your post. Bernard, sadly, is the best we've got. And is worth resigning. Beattie we don't need. I'd rather they used the money to buy a top defender.

Sounness begs for patience....

"Graeme Souness has pleaded with Newcastle fans to be patient and told them to start judging him after he has brought in his own players."

Souness has slagged him off left right and centre. Le Robert is not very happy. The arseing arsewitt. Honestly. I bleed Black and White. I was so close to joining them aswell. Sh!t happens. Move on.

Bernard in Juve's sights (http://skysports.planetfootball.com/list.asp?hlid=246952&cpid=8&CLID=4&lid=&title=Bernard+in+Juve's+sights&channel=Premiership)

Souness probably has had it with Bernard but I don't think that is the main reason we are signing Babayaro. The club isn't willing to argue over Bernard's contract so they are open to letting him be transferred in January. Juve shows some interest in Bernard and will probably take him in January. Babayaro's arrival more or less signals Bernard's exit in the transfer window. That's my take on it anyway.
