I'm sure everyone has been following the tsunami disaster stories on the news, the latest toll of the dead is over 58,000 but is expected to rise to 100,000. I think folks here in the DC area can certainly relate to having a seemingly normally day turned horribly upside down.

What I've seen reported is that the most needed item at this time is cash so I'm proposing to the folks here that we have a virtual DC supporters happy hour to raise some funds. My suggestion is that you donate the cost of a pint (or if you're feeling generous, your whole bar tab) to one of the relief organizations. While getting together at a pub and "passing the hat" would be fun as always, this saves someone the hassle of collecting and forwarding the funds (and you choose which organization to support).

The following agencies are collecting donations (these are long established relief agencies). Pick whichever is your favorite.

This has my official blessing.

I can not wrap my head around the level of devestation. The Post is reporting the death toll crossing the 76,000 mark. It's a scale beyond comprehension.

What's sad is logging into Yahoo and seeing the number rise in the headlines.

Thanks for the links K.

This a great idea K, although I would hope people will donate more than a pints worth of money. Maybe we can organize the January HH in addition to what people donate online. I know I'll give what I can and then a little extra too.

Note that Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/) is collecting money for the American Red Cross (100% of the donation goes to the Red Cross).

If you've purchased through them in the past, you can probably enter an amount and "one click" a donation. Couldn't be easier.

Over $1.5 million has been raised through them since yesterday.

That's amazing! And wonderful.

Where did you find the $1.5 million figure?

Where did you find the $1.5 million figure? When you click to give (anwhere on the front-page notice), the subsequent donation page displays the figures on the right side.

As of just now:
Total Collected: $1,876,018.00
# of Payments: 33829 It's up to date, as anytime you refresh the screen, it includes new totals.

When you donate they show you a running total. I believe it's at $1.8m now.

If you want to donate clothes, food and/or medicine you can drop them off at the International Buddhist Center in Silver Spring (in the Wheaton area). They're rounding up items for relief in Sri Lanka. You might want to call first.

Just wanted to Bump this thread and ask a question. Will the SuperDraft replace the January Happy Hour? I'd like to see us get together (those that can't make the Draft) and maybe raise a few more bucks for a real worthy cause.

Bueller?.....

Chico,
I posted some info in this thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=154935&page=4) if you or anyone in the Barra needs directions and parking suggestions for the superdraft. As for donations during the superdraft I think that's a great idea.

Thanks for the link dude, me making the Draft is 50-50 right now. I've been buried under a ton of work but I'll do my best. Depending on the turnout for the Draft, I'd still like to see us get together at least one more time before the season. In the mean time, PLEASE folks...give what you can to your local Red Cross or any other relief effort in progress.

Yeah, but that might not be till February sometime and not in a Happy Hour location where alot more Barra/Eagles/La Norte who can't make the party tend to show up.

ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Just wanted to share this with my fellow fans...

I went to Happy Hour tonight just to meet some players of my old soccer team. We sat and talked and joked around for awhile and then talked about South Asia. I told my friends that if they donated any $$ I would match it. Well it started out kind of funny because we were talking to some nice looking ladies but then it got serious. I told them if we raised any money up to $500 I would match it. In a little over 3 hours we raised $437 JUST BY ASKING! I hope to raise the rest at work tomorrow and writing the RED CROSS a check for the sum on Monday.

People are willing to help out folks, It's serious business. Please give....

Wow, that's awesome!

I cross posted this idea on another chat list I'm on (just changed the virtual theme to fit that site) and it's going over really well.

The scope of this tragedy is such that assistance will be necessary over the next few months, if not longer. So, IMO, even a February Happy Hour collection would no doubt be timely and appropriate.

The Ravens sent out people with buckets to stand before the main entrance to the stadium before last Sunday's game and collected a little over $51 K from the fans. The Ravens added $25 K on their own to the pot. Doesn't sound like much considering the attendance at the game, but it certainly was a step in the right direction.
