So I'm listening to the Man U - Villa game on the computer (Century FM) and watching it live on FSW. When Giggs scored his goal, I heard it first on the internet radio, and it took more than 2 minutes for Giggs to score on FSW. Anyone else notice this?

Not today, but I've seen similar delays before.

How do you get your FSW? When watching sports and talking to my brother on the phone, we've noticed 10-15 second difference between his cable feed for ESPN and my DISH network feed.

I get FSW through TWCNYC Digital.
I know that Yankees games are 7 seconds delayed compared to the 'live' radio broadcast.
But I was shocked that the FSW game was over 2 minutes behind the internet audio broadcast, and I must assume even that is delayed somewhat.

Is it because when England says the game kicks off at 3:00, it actually kicks off at 3:00, whereas in the U.S. it would kick off at 3:05 or so? So a 2 minute delay would give FSW a chance to show lineups, etc.
I'm just guessing but sees like a plausible explanation.

I've seen a delay with FSW before, but I don't think it was as long as 2 minutes. I remember thinking the delay was longer than you'd expect from a signal bouncing off a satellite.

Part of it is that FSI uses one EPL broadcast production for both English and Spanish language coverage (bilingual US graphics). Either FSW Producer or Oliver mentioned about a year ago that at least part of the delay for live, midweek, games is to give the Spanish language commentators time to prepare a goal call.
For weekend games, the Spanish language broadcast isn't live, so I think the delay is less (the announcers could theoretically re-record commentary after the games end).
Don't forget the satellite transmission from London to Los Angeles and then to the various cable and satellite providers probably takes some time.

I did notice the long delay today while listening to the United-Villa match on Sirius and watching on FSW. The match on FSW didn't begin airing until 12:04pm here on the west coast but Sirius began exactly at 12:00pm. The delay coincided with the lineups on FSW and the moment of silence today before the game.

Both GOL! and FSW often delay "Live" matches so they can have a block of commercials between the intro and the kickoff. I've seen matches kick off as much as seven minutes after the actual kickoff several times on Gol!. They tend to then shorten the halftime break to about ten minutes, and carry the second half live or at least much closer to live.

They have to prepare for a goal call? That's rather odd. I would think the spontaneous excitement would be much better than a goal which the announcer has prepared to call for a minute or two!

I think this is because EPL involves a lot of players that nobody in Latin America has ever heard of, unlike other leagues which have a lot of Brazilian and Argentinian players. The commentators are basically making up nicknames and other shtick.

Euro 2004 was the same. Internet radio was ahead of the TV (FSW). But BigSoccer and some other message boards/internet stat places were even quicker. About a 4 minute delay from "live" to all media catching up there.
Thx,
Jay!
