I played for a team in high school that was very much the bottom of the barrel for all but one of the years I played. It was a struggle to keep my spirits, because although I got constant plaudits for my personal play and everyone agreed that I was the one player on the team to watch, I really wanted to win more than anything.
Then I got an offer from a private school who had won three state titles. The school could not of course offer me an athletic scholarship, but the could present academic ones. I was top in my class, and the coach offered my parents a half-ride to transfer.
My parents foolishly left it up to me to decide, and I chose to stay with my friends in a very ghetto, very poor academic/athletic environment rather than go to this private school with a bunch of snotty rich kids.
Big mistake. Although I learned alot from going to school where I did, including humility and grace in defeat, it was a great struggle to get aknowledged by college coaches outside my area. In contrast, the kids from my corresponding class at this private school went to the state tourney final four all four years, and 47 of 49 of them went off to Ivy League schools on scholarship.
I shoulda transfered..... now if I want to see any of my high school friends, I gotta order a pizza delivered or turn on Cops on TV.

Well, if you're unhappy with your team and think you can play on a better one, why wouldn't you transfer? It doesn't sound like you're becoming a better player by staying there.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk but if you were a stand out, you would probably lead your team to victory and such. I totally understand your plight, however only great players can turn things around for teams. In your case, you should consider a transfer, but figure out where you would stand if you were to transfer--due to your current team 'sucking' (for lack of a better word) would you be stuck on the bench? Or are you on par with the the better team?

You are a jerk. Have you ever played for a team like this? I did for six f...ing years as my high school team was so bad I actually started for them as a 7th grader...... no I don't mean started playing for them - I started at center back for a high school team when I was 13 years old. I tried everything I could, played as hard and smart as I could, but to no avail. We won no more than 4 or 5 games a year until my senior year because there weren't even enough guys who could pass the ball more than twenty feet who could give me the ball so I COULD do something with it.
My senior year we had 13 or 14 solid players, and 2 or 3 outstanding ones. I scored 19 goals, had 11 assists and my team went 16-4-4. I was second leading goalscorer in the area, and was recruited by every local college and university. But because no one else knew about me, only mid-level or low level out of state programs were interested in my letters. I got recruited by Coastal Carolina and decided to go there because they were the sole D1 program that had any hope of succeeding that had wanted me.
I played two years of college ball and took an offer to play semi-pro. I did that for 6 years, captaining my teams for 5 years and leading the one to several championships. I found that the better the team was around me, the better I could play because I only needed someone to get me the ball and then someone to get on the end of my passes. The higher level I went, the more I stood out. A successful A-league trial validated the highest level that I had thought myself capable of playing...... I will die satisfied that I went as far as I could have and played as well as I was capable of.
As for those years of frustration...... I could have and should have taken the scholarship opportunity that came to me and gone to that private school. I would have been far more fullfilled, and spent far less time later in college just spinning my wheels. I could've met my potential a lot earlier. The only valid point I would connect to your post is that a good player is a good player regardless of what team he plays on.
The young man who started this thread needs to keep that in mind and endure as long as he has to until he can make a change for the better.

I am in the same problem i have played for my team for 8 years at first we won everything but now we are rubbish in division two and i am trying to get into academy because i know i am gd enough and have been told by many academy coaches...But the problem is i wud play brilliantly every week do evrything but no one else wud do anything they have all been my mates for years but to fufill my dreams i believe i must move on to the best team in division 1... Instead of looking after myself i have been thinking about the team too much when i should have moved ages ago but now i think i will move to fufill m personal dreams and what is better for me rather than the team.
So i think you should go but make sure u are in the team and not on the bench because it is the worse thing ever living a team as a best player to leaving and being the worst on the bench.

If you wanna be your best, you need to play with the best and play against the best. TRANSFER! Even training sessions will help you improve if you're playing on a team with other quality players. Plus when you play on bad teams you pick up bad habits!

stay on your highschool team. Keep practicing, and lead them to victory. Imagine how good that will make you look to make a bad team look good.

He's not talking about a high school team. I was by way of example. As for staying on the team I did. As for leading them to victory.... yeah right. It takes more than one player I keep telling you all. There are valuable lessons about the game and life that I learned playing on that struggling team, but still. Given the choice, I would have jumped at the opportunity to have transfered to a private school.
