Seeing his "vision" for Ward 8 kinda scares me about DC United's stadium unless he can be marginalized by the Mayor and Linda Cropp. Looks like he's setting himself up for race/class warfare to build his political base and that is going to be in direct opposition to the United Stadium.

Actually, I wouldn't expect Barry to oppose the stadium, though I'm sure he'll want to put his stamp on the deal. He wrote an op-ed piece in the Post a few weeks ago criticizing the baseball deal, but he didn't complain about the public funding issue (which isn't an issue with the proposed SSS anyway) - his main point was that all of the concessions to Angelos (esp. the guaranteed bigger chunk of TV revenue) will handicap the DC team and make it a permanent second-class citizen in the area baseball scene.

From what I understand about the proposed SSS (a mixuture of funding from AEG, a private developer, and infrastructure improvements paid for by the city, a la MCI Center), none of the main objections that various councilmemebers had to the baseball deal exist. Whatever else you want to say about Barry, he is not stupid - I wouldn't be surprised if he and other councilmembers critical of the baseball deal get behind the SSS as an example of how the mayor should have structured the whole Nationals mess.

Love him or hate him, DCU and the DCSEC will have to work with Marion. Best to get him on board as early as possible. As he's not well I think he's looking at his coming term as a last chance to put a positive stamp on his legacy of being a polititian in this town.

Yeah,

Bring him to a Metros game. He'll learn there is an atrocity even greater than public financing of a baseball stadium. :)

I for one would like to know DCU's contingency plans if they encounter any political opposition. I know KP is super secretive but I'm sure someone, somewhere can ferret out the plans. My concerns revolve around the statement by Mark Tuhoey(sp?) that RFK will be torn down in about three years due to structural problems. While I am confident that DCSEC, DC City Council, the Mayor, and AEG/MLS can strike a deal for a SSS in the District, the baseball deal fiasco leads me to think that the powers that be are too capricious to be trusted. Does KP move the team to Maryland or Va if he can't get a real deal in place within the next six months, assuming that construction of a SSS will take more that two years?

I think Barry will want what he's always wanted. Cushy jobs for his incompetent cronies. Nothing more, nothing less.

United Park gets built where RFK (sometime in the near future) once stood.

I heard Marion Barry on Elliott in the Morning about 2 or 3 weeks back. One of the things hizonner said he was doing was "learning about soccer". It is on his radar without, apparently, a negative bias. Make some space in the pub or in an outbuilding available for a Douglass memorial and you'd get hizonner further on board (plus maybe a tax break would be generated). I think the eventual developer will have the onus of granting various perks to the Council, building inspectors, etc., because I just don't see DCU immersing themselves in urban politics at that level.

On the bright side, DCU can present this to Barry and his supporters as a sign that Ward 8 isn't the 'city dump,' as one resident is quoted as saying.

Or, Mark Fisher and Kornholizer can use it as evidence that it IS...

= The guy sounds one step short of being a Marxist.

Thank Christ for DC they have Mayor Williams.

I hope Grillmaster is right that he can be swayed. I think it will take AEG paying for everything down to the trash removal + a great deal of persuasion. God help us if he decides to go against us. The sad thing is we shouldnt have to kiss his a$$ to build in the worst part of town. The moron should be lobbying us.

The problem is the people and businesses that will be displaced. Unfortunately, no developer wants to build a new ghetto to accomodate them. Go figure.

Get him a Colombian connection and I bet he will be all for a SSS.

I'm always amazed how many people from far outside this area come around just to pine away that their mayor would be as cool as our former Mayor Barry. I mean, the guy smokes crack and gets with hookers, what more could you ask for in a leader... He's just one of the guys, a regular Joe crackpipe, just like the rest of us...
