i just jog and cycle and my calfs are toned. I think the more you kick a ball too the more toned your muscles become.

Stairs is also a great way to work them, as it's also a form of toe raises. Also variations of climbing stairs, such as make sure your feet are facing forward, or diagonally, those help in working out parts that are not used often. Remember to go down the stairs to loosen the muscles up after going up to avoid cramping.

Do not concentrate on just your calves. Work all three muscle groups evenly or else you will suffer from pulled hamstrings and quads for years. The three muscle groups are meant to work with and against each other, so if you unbalance them, you will have major problems. Tightening the calves will likely have the most effect on your hammys....... just ask Michael Owen what thats all about. Try these exercises:

Single leg lunges with full extension at the top. Get into lunge position with the foot far enough forward that when you drop your other knee all the way to the floor, the knee of your front leg doesn't extend forward out past your ankle.... this is bad on your knees and it doesn't stress the calves and hamstrings as much as it should. Do not do one rep and switch the forward leg. Do ten to fifteen reps with the one leg forward, then switch. The way to hit the calves hard on this one is to explode into the air at the top of this one. This will work out the affected muscles much more effectively.

Learn how to dead lift. Do the triple extension the right way, (Hips, knees, ankles), and you will be more than happy with the results.

Unfortunately, Calves are a very stubborn muscle group, and b/c of their constant use, they contain very dense muscle fibers that are resisitant to change.... Those who have big/developed calves have them from genetics..

I would focus on calf raises (2x a week)with higher rep ranges 10-15..

It can be done, but it will be harder to get results than lets say chest, arms, etc....

What works for me, esp. the lower calves, is to run on a beach with no shoes.
The continous lifting of the feet off the sand creates such a powerful calf.

But then again, it may be too cold for you Northerners to run on a beach.

Run backwards occassionally. Make sure you stay on the balls of your feet when you do it.

I'm not a fan of any backward motion type stuff UNLESS you ease into it and keep it up regularly. One issue that it brings into play is using muscles in ways they're not used to which increases the chances of opporunity.

And why do that when all one needs to tone calves is a stairway?

Whole, dry-shelled corn. That's the way to go for strong, healthy calves.

Calves don't have much to do with kicking power anyways, its all about a good solid technique and swinging from the hip.
