Depends on whether or not its by raw numbers or by percentages. Percentage - the Eiredivisie. Numbers - Brazil or Argentina.

Hmmm.....tough to say. On my team - Robben and Lampard. (Robben being more exciting, edging it out.) Overall - Sheva and Nesta.

Overall, yes. There has not been any excessive gain in technique at the highest level. The Brazil of old might have been better than the current Brazilian team. However, many teams including European and Asian teams have improved compared to the past. Nevertheless, there are a few teams that have become worse.

Well thanks for taking the time to do this Nice. It's quite a fascinating read - some of your answers really surprised me, but for the good.

The problem here is that people think SerieA is really defensive; its not. As many goals are scored per game as in Spain and England. However, think of 3 good Italian CBs. Just 3. Yes, I know, Nesta and Cannavaro (although I've always thought Fabio was a bit overrated) are good, but the third central defender for Italy is...........Materazzi. Yes, the same one who failed at Everton, as I recall, and who's inclusion is an offense to all Azzurri fans. There are some good foreign CBs in Italy, of course. Cordoba, Thuram, Chivu, Mexes and Ujfalusi. But Inter starts Mihajlovic for ********'s sake. Mihajlovic! Can you imagine any of the top 4 sides in England starting a clod of his age? He makes Bramble look good!
Note, Sinisa was a great player 5 years ago. But its not 5 years ago anymore.

and 15-18 were really interesting to me. You have to wonder how many title Di Stefano would have amassed at Real if he had gone there earlier in his career.

Heh - Real has two eras. BDF, and ADF. Before, and after. He was winning titles before Puskas got there, and he was the one that encouraged Gento's inclusion into the side. And while he was part of the second greatest club side of all time in Europe (I rank 94 Milan a bit above), he was also part of arguably South America's best ever side, playing a part in the La Maquina side. At 20, River jettisoned the great Perdenera to make room for him, after he scored nearly a goal a game while on loan at Huaracan. He won 2 Argentine titles, 4 Colombian and 8 Spanish league titles. Ah, but for a World Cup appearance. :(

I'd have to agree about Vicente being the most underated player as well.

The whole Valencia side gets short shrift, save for Ayala. Vicente, Aimar, Baraja (who has slipped a bit since the Euros, where he was decidedly mediocre) and Canizares are wonderful players. Aimar's never truly lived up to his potential though; injuries have hurt there.

We are witnessing a different game, not necessarily a better game. In all but some positions, fitness has replaced football IQ and intimacy with the ball as the key attribute. Work-rate is often more prized by managers than technical ability. Specialists now abound, whereas past players were more well rounded in their concept of the game (this is especially evident in the midfield).
