What about Benni McCarthy who has been a very BIG success with FC Porto? His goals were critical to Porto's charge to CL glory the past season(Top goal scorer in Portugal?) and he is a very critical factor in Porto's fortunes in the current season. It's time he gets his recognition....

What is the cut-off point by the way....are we looking at Jan to Dec calendar year or what?

If Mccarthy doesn´t win the prize this year when will it be?!
Portuguese league winner and top goalscorer, CL winner, Intercontinental Cup winner...only Etoo can fight for the first place but his achievments are nowhere near Mccarthy.

LdC the portugese fanboy strikes again! Apart from the first leg against ManUre, McCarthy has been non-existent in world football.

E'too deserves this award not only for his brilliant performances for Barca this season but also last season with Mallorca.

Obviously you're joking or else you DO NOT really know who Benedict Saul McCarthy is....here is a bit of him that you probably chose not to know about..

1. Top scored at the African Youth Championships in 1996/97 and was an intergral part of the South African Under-20 team that went to play in the Malaysia '97 finals for the first time in the country's history.

2. Top scored at the African Nations Cup finals in 1998 which ensured that South Africa went to the final where unfortunately they lost to a tactically superior Egypt. This was practically a budding side that was in the throes of a painful transition....having had their coach fired and a care-taker coach installed in the run-up to the finals.

3. Became an idol and a big part of the Ajax side that was badly depleted following the exodus of the golden generation of Seedorf, Kluivert,Davids, the De Boers etc and kept them going with his goals..

AND

4. Though he was not a success with either Atletico Madrid and Celta Vigo, a move to FC Porto resurrected his career and the rest as they say is History...see the profile below though it leaves out some of the details about the player as WE know him.

BENNI DESERVES the award over ETO'O in my opinion.

And again Mad Theory shows that he doens´t know what he is talking about...
Obviously for you he is non existent in world football, probably you never saw a single game of the Portuguese Superleague, the only time you see Mccarthy he is scoring goals against English teams, Manchester United, Chelsea...
IMO Etoo is better player than Mccarthy but like i said his achievments this year can´t compare with the one´s Mccarthy obtained, so nothing more to say if anyone should win this trophy is Mccarthy.

i understand that macarthy is a very good player and i think he is very talented. but it comes down to the competition that he plays the others such as eto and drogba play in much more competitive leagues such as the premiership and la liga and the quality of the portugals league just isnt as good so their impact must be valued as higher becaus of where they play

But McCarthy was very critical to Porto's CL success whose competitiveness, quality and prestige far surpasses that of the competitive leagues you refer to.......and this WILL be a very big factor in determining the winner. He made a far much bigger impact with FC Porto than Samuel Eto'o Fils did with Mallorca!

However, my misgivings about the CAF award is that it is populist in nature and the issues that afflict the FIFA WPOTY award have been seen to influence decisions to award it in the past....

Votes by national associations affiliated to CAF can never be an accurate measure of a player's achievements where some of the managers hardly watch international football as much as one would expect.....

But if meritocracy was to take precedence then Benni should win easily.Eto'o plays for a glamour club,a relatively glamour national team and this has tended to inflate his profile. Make no mistake he is more talented than Benni but in terms of delivery in the past season Benni is tops...

There used to be another version of the African Player of the Year award before the CAF one was introduced, sponsored by the French paper L'Equipe which ran along the same lines as France Football's Balon D'or(European Footballer of the Year)...

This latter award was the more credible and prestigious as the selection was made by knowledgeable people....Sports journalists who follow the game on a consistent basis...does anyone know whether the award is still "alive" or not? This was THE AWARD not the parody that the CAF thing has tended to be!

dont forget Yakubu of portsmouth who has scored 8 goals while the next best on his team is 3, he basically has no teamates backing him while drogba has 8 goals and has gudjohnsen, duff, lampard, and robben to back him up. those four guys all have more goals then any one on portsmouth except yakubu, he has definately made an impact in the premiere league, i also think that eto'o or mccarthy could have a shot over drogba
