Hello, this is my first season to follow a premier league club, I chose NUFC because I have two friends that are Chelsea and Arsenal fans so I decided on choosing the black and white army. Just recently did I discover this board and it was more active than others I have read on NUFC so I decided to join. Being an American I dont know many of the traditions performed by NUFC or any "rules" to being a fan of Newcastle. I have caught a couple NUFC games on Fox Sports World over here in the States. As I was reading over several chants on other threads it is obvious that NUFC fans hate Sunderland and boro. Also I was wondering if there are any other traditions or greetings said by NUFC fans? For example I am from Oklahoma and our nickname is the Sooners. when we see anothe fan one will say "Boomer" and the other says "Sooner", is there anything like that?

you have to learn the geordie dictionary.
http://www.geordiepride.demon.co.uk/dictionary.htm

also if it's cold out then you can't wear a coat, you have to wear a T-Shirt (preferably a Newcastle shirt). The only exception to this is when it's really cold, when you have to go bare chested.

you can even translate to Geordie, your post becomes...

Being an American I dont know many of the traditions performed by NUFC or any "rules" to being a fan of Newcastle. ?

Rule #1: Idolize Alan Shearer.
Rule #2: Despise all other Newcastle players (especially if they are from France).

The rules for being a Newcastle fan include finding a good stress ball for watching games and using it every time that our defense is pressured. I call it my "Bramble Ball".

You also might want to have it handy whenever you go on the internet and find out the latest news about which dysfunctional squad member mouthed off to the media that morning.

Glad to have you on the bandwagon, even if that wagon is looking a little shaky right now.

Ya, this season has been really shaky, but my soccer friends that got me into the epl said NUFC had a great tradition so that is the main reason I chose them.

"Howay the lads" means something like "Go on you guys!". Mel B or someone else can correct me. I've also seen "howay" spelled "ha'way".

Sunderland = Mackems
Boro = Smoggies

I'd equate the rivalry between NUFC & Sunderland like the Red River Shootout 'tween the Sooners & Longhorns.

It was absolutly freezing. A t-shirt was all i was wearing. Being so close to the North Sea. You get used to the cold.

Same goes with the smog monsters.That doesn't cut it here in the States, sunshine. When we hate a team, we hate them 24/7. Just ask any DC United fan what they think of the Metro fan and you'll get an X-rated response. (No) Apologies to NYR Metros who, despite his obvious handicap, still supports a class EPL team.

Thx,

Jay!

ps Quality not Quantity Mel. Calling a steaming pile a buttercup doesn't make it so.

No problems mate. You should have seen us (the ESC) down at RFK for the playoff game. I was surprised to discover how much I really hate DC, and their scumbag supporters. But then again, about 20 or 30 DC goons decided it would be fun to spend the entire 2nd half trying to instigate a fight with us. With that said, did meet a few cool DC people on these boards here.

I have to admit that between the three clubs in that area, NUFC is head and shoulders above Sunderland and Boro.
But Boro is catching up after SAF's #2 went there from OT.
But you still have a chance of finishing up above Boro since there are 19
games left Mel!
