Why o why do they allow them in some countries? Major culprits being Italy and France. Many a time players have been hurt by these objects being thrown to them and they are also a potential fire hazard. Why UEFA allows this kind of thing to continue is beyond me! One time I saw a flare thrown onto the pitch and exploded right in a keeper's face!

Not allowed anywhere...

Pff, I wish they were allowed. That would be a lot safer sometimes. In Holland people give the flares over to each other, otherwise someone would be held responsible at get a stadium ban. It's a lot safer if you can just hold the flare in your own hand. But throwing flares at the pitch is dangerous and must be forbidden.

In Italy, Flares and Fireworks in Stadiums are illegal, but somehow the supporters sneak them in without the guards at the door knowing. When i went to Italy in October I saw a Fiorentina game. When I went through Security, they don't check if you have anything.

Even if they do check (odd that they didn't btw)... it's not that hard.

That PSG video is SHOCKING.

They should be banned from europe for 50 years and forced to play behind closed doors for a season.Someone must of got hurt in that !

It was like having a professional fireworks display in the middle of the crowd, for christs sake

The stand looks like it is on fire.I seriously hope PSG get punished for that.

Iif it's used correctly, I cannot imagine a reason why they should ban it. Unfortunetaly, you have some idiots who abuse using flares...

As for the PSG-video: one of their directors had said something about fans who use flares, and the response to him (and their head of security, who takes some repressive measures that disallow the PSG "ultras" to support the way they want) is shown in the video. It's not "just" an action, but a way to protest againt 'repression'... something a lot of ultra-groups are coping with.

Well thanks for that assessment. If you were a fan of PSG and knew the recent problems that are happening you would have course knew that it was a protest against the board of directors.

And since when the hell does the entire Boulogne get "hurt." These are our ultras you idiot. The last thing they are worried about is getting hurt. Please read more into the situation and understand the culture and the fans before you make stupid comments like this.

The LFP are tossers. We have been given something like 250,000 euros in accumlated fines this year.

We only got "threatened" with a stadium ban this year, when some morons went on the rampage at Strasbourg last year.

The flares are dumb. It's stupid to set them off no matter who you support cause the smoke gets on the field and then you can't see and the players can't see and everyone has to wait around until the smoke has kinda cleared so you have some chance of seeing the ball 5 feet in front of you. The should be banned everywhere, go play with fire out in the parking lot or something.

Is it just me, or is it mostly the Americans trotting out all the wonderful "Flares are dumb" arguments?

In case you people wonder why U.S. pro sports games are almost never any fun to attend, look in the mirror...

Some people can be entertained in other ways than playing with fire. In case you haven't noticed, americans are easily amused and thanks to smoky the bear know that playing with fire isn't safe. How bored are you guys that you find the need to light fires in the middle of games, and the smoke from them isn't helping anyone.

Accidents do happen but the vast majority of matches where flares are present go off without major problems.

Distress flares that can be launched have been responsible for afew incidents in games .
-Fan was killed at a wales international match after being hit a flare.
-Women had her catch fire at a turkey vs england game after a flare landed on her.
-I remember when england played Holland at a world cup qualifier in rotterdam in 93 .The clogs were setting them off all night .One nearly hit paul ince on the pitch .A fan in the crowd got hit straight in the eye by a flare and couldnt get medical attention because the fans had been locked in.

Its the d1ckheads responsible for incidents like the ones listed above that got flares banned. They are also supposed to be a fire risk .

If I remember right, not much of anything is allowed in American stadiums. I'm not even sure if you can wave flags around. Flags on poles that is.

Can you imagine what would happen if you set off a flare at JFK? You'd be thrown out, banned for life, maybe arrested and you'd get a visit from the homeland security folk who wanted to investigate your terroristic actions.

I'm American and I like the flares as well as the general soccer stadium crowd of flag-waving, chanting, and jumping. I so wish our American pro sports leagues would have the same intensity. BUT...

I love my country, and so do you. So does Germany (We all know why). American football is the second most popular sport in Germany, go figure. NFL Europe should just be called NFL Bundesliga because almost all the teams are German. American culture is more popular in Europe than European culture, go figure. France's economy hasn't grown much for decades now, go figure.

lol, its funny you mention the risk. Last year at the French cup final, after we won, I lit one outside and almost blew my arm off trying to light it (the wrong ********ing way! - lol :D)

You live, you learn

True, remember some game in Argentina when one thrown from the stands ignited the toilet paper thrown too. Result -

Burning inferno! burn baby burn!
