SURPRISE CHOICE: The U.S. will host Guatemala in its first home final-round World Cup qualifier in Birmingham, Ala., at 8 p.m. on March 30. Birmingham, which has never hosted a qualifier, hosted the U.S. twice in the 1996 Olympics. Foxboro, Columbus, Carson, Calif., and Washington, D.C. are among several candidates to host the four remaining home matches, sources said.

It would be surprising if DC got a match, since RFK is being turned into a baseball field even as I type this. Let's hope the USMNT doesn't have to play on a crap dirt infield for an important qualifier. Or crap sod tossed down to cover it up, or whatever crap solution they are going to use to convert the field back and forth for DCU.

Amen to that. My wishes to sabotage the NATS (Baseball ones) almost came true, but alas - - baseball is the bride, soccer's not even an ugly stepsister/bridesmaid.
Not to speculate but you can put down on your calendar C-bus for Mexico game. I can't see why they would bother playing in DC but I wouldn't mind.
You're also right about Foxboro and Carson.

This is not a rumor. It is an article in the New York Daily News. The title as changed is not grammatical.

Can't see a qualifier in DC. Ravens Stadium, maybe. RFK, noop. New York Daily News writers have obvious proclivities for speculation. I won't believe their ass. Or the rest of them.

For all the grief Thomas receives on this board (and I've given my share, to be sure), I have to agree with him on this. An article in the NY Daily News is not a rumor picked up at the TGIF's in the O'Hare terminal.
It's speculation, but a report in a major daily shouldn't be dismissed as rumor-mongering. I came close to skipping his thread, in large part due to the "rumor" aspect of the title.

Nothing is official until the Fed announces it, Thomas. As was the case with the Guatemala match in Birmingham.
Hence, the title change to this thread stays, as D.C., Foxboro and L.A. are all among the rumored cities to get some other WCQ's.

I trust the N.Y. Daily News as a reputable source in print; it's certainly one of the more trusted sources.
But I'll believe the factual nature of it when U.S. Soccer actually announces the reality of it all. That will make it official.
As for substantiating the rumors, going to be really hard to see Washington getting a game, especially with the baseball mess at RFK. I think we've already established in these forums that Fed-Ex Field is now not big enough (eg., too narrow) to host a game, so Baltimore and Ravens Stadium (that would be M&T Bank Stadium now, wouldn't it?) would be the next best option along the Beltway.
Also, Foxboro will likely get a game, I can see that happening. The "they always do" reason sounds contrived, but with the Krafts being among some of the bigger power-brokers around U.S. Soccer circles, it's hard not seeing Foxboro not getting a match.
The west coast is due, certainly, but I'd rather put a game of this magnitude in Seattle or Portland before it goes to the HDC or anywhere else in California. Just too many variables going against my old home state.

Don't forget Columbus for the really big matches.
Cold as hell, no Mexicans, Guatemalans, TnTers or the like.

I could see a WCQ happening at RFK if it's for a game after 10/1 when the baseball season is over. That would give them time to completely re-sod.
Durring the MLB season is going to be iffy unless this tray system works better here than it did in the Swamp.

You didn't go through other threads based on press reports and mangle their titles did you? Changing something someone wrote so it looks ungrammatical or stupid is an old Big Soccer trick. The original headline said "Report: DC and Foxboro to Get Remaining Qualifiers." "Report" is an old journalistic way of reporting something that has not been confirmed officially but does come from a trusted source. People who read lots of newspapers see it almost every day. Today's New York Times, Age of Melbourne or any other major daily has many articles based on unnamed sources. You would have to rewrite half the headlines to conform to this standard...or selectively applied standard.
No wonder the national team is losing fans.

Having used to work as a journo, and for a lot of years, Thomas, I think I know this all too well. Hell, I did my stint as a copy-editor and as a sub-editor for a bit, and I know how the process works.
The re-working of the title is perfectly gramatical as it is-- but you're really getting away from the topic at hand. Which is what venues are rumored to get these games, and not the mere rumors themselves.
No wonder the national team is losing fans.
Now that's totally irrelevant, and we won't go there.
Let's stick to discussing the relevance of the current speculation of where the remaining WCQ's will be put (something that I've already begun to address, by the way).

Unfortunately, the cold factor, the one thing we have the other teams don't, won't play in this round. The first game could have been a cold game, but is being played in Alabama. The last home game is October 12 and it's not likely to be all that cold in many continental US places.

Updated schedule for WCQ's (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3807019&postcount=104)
The March 30 date is the only one confirmed to this point.
Still up in the air, and yet to be awarded, are matches for the dates of early June, mid-August, early September (that's the home fixture against Mexico, by the way) and mid-October.
That's what we need to work around, with what's already been rumored and proposed.

OK it's not a rumor. It's speculation, and speculation without corroboration is about as useful as rumor. Besides, I once read in the NY Daily News that there were WMD in Iraq, but that was just speculation.

Wait a minute, are you saying there are no WMD in Iraq? If there are no WMD in Iraq then why have we sacrificed over 1,000 of America's finest while exponentially increasing the all-time high level of hatred for America in the Muslim world, spawning countless more terrorists who exist only to bring death to us and our way of being. I guess what I'm trying to say is why the hell isn't Frisco on the short list for hosting a WCQ??!!
