On Galaxy Deportivo last week the Los Angeles Galaxy coach gave an interivew about his recent scouting trip to Argentina. He mentioned the possible loan of River Plate's Daniel Leduena(22yrs. old) to the LA Galaxy for 2005.

Can anyone tell me who this kid is and if he's any good? Also, if there's any news confirming this from the Argentina side?

I can't confirm or deny any rumors of his being moved, but I can offer an opinion.

Daniel, nicknamed Hachita, was given opportunities to win the starting position after the departure of Andres D'Allessandro, but was unable to capitalize. Leo Astrada seems now to have lost total faith in him. Daniel appeared in only 4 games during the recently ended Apertura, and was not a reserve on the bench in most other matches.

Daniel's problem, to me, was a lack of aggression. He has a very light and accurate touch, but in almost all circumstances he would pass and not look for a shooting opportunity. Defendors knew he was not going to go for the net. This seemed to change a bit after he started to find himself on the bench, but most of his shots were then being taken from the outside. He was not in the habit of working his way in.

He is a very gentlemanly player and not given to a rough style. That can either be an asset or a detriment, depending on the circumstances surrounding him. It was sometimes frustrating.

I like Daniel, but I've feared he would be loaned out for some time now. Frankly, I'm surprised it's taken this long. If he comes to LA, I will follow him with interest and definately go to see him play when the Galaxy visit the MetroStars.

He certainly has a lot of talent. Fast, good touch, tricky ball skills.... IMO he will never be as good as Dallessandro or Nelson Cuevas, but that is a high standard. I say he would be a better pickup than that Costa Rican Centeno. Interesting bit of info.

Is it Leduena or Luduena? I think he would be a great spark for the Galaxy. The guy can play and he can be fun to watch. He has great skills, although he needs to be more consistent. But the gayina starting line-up is hard to crack, and it is hard to get into a rhythm when you're not playing.

But for the love of God I hope if he comes that he can find a decent barber. I think he cuts his hair with an axe. :D

Given the success of Gomez with DC United, I'd say Leduena has plenty of potential to do well in MLS - However, he'll need to be in the right mix of players to go with what he does best - With Gomez this was being the Attacking Midfielder, the focal point of fluid attack with both strikers willing to go to the wings as necessary to open up space for the AMid - What would Leduena's role be at LA Galaxy? - Would it play to what he does best? - Even when playing consistently in previous years, he never seemed like THE PRIMARY guy bringing the ball up from Defense or distributing on Offense - He always seemed like an auxiliary role filling in on the sides - Nice to have a really good player there, but giving up a Senior International slot for just a supporting player is a bit much

His name is Daniel Emanuel Ludueña. His brother Gonzalo is also in the River system.

I think his hairdo is distinctive. I remember Max Bretos once saying it defied the law of gravity. I think he should keep it.

This has been going on for months NOW! I am a socio of River Plate and someone I know from the club told me that the LA Galaxy have been looking at Daniel for awhile. Astrada, the head coach, confirmed that there really isn't a spot for Daniel right now on the team a LOAN to LA Galaxy would most likely happen before a LOAN to a rival club... That's what he told me...

Daniel has GREAT skill and a great vision he would be a asset for LA.

Mario,

I'm planning on traveling down to Buenos Aires in June of 2005 for the ARG-BRZ match. Do you think I could meet Leo in person since River and the league will shut down for a few days? I didn't get the chance to meet him when he came to San Diego this past summer. It would be like a dream come true.

The only way you could meet some of the guys in person is to go to a practice session of River and after the training they usually sign autographs. Am going to mendoza next month to see them play against Racing so hopefully I'll meet some of the players.

Good. Mexico would be a better fit. I don't trust the coaches in MLS to utilize players like Daniel properly and give them the full shot they deserve to prove themselves.

If that is true, it is a loss for the Galaxy and MLS. They need exciting players in order to improve the league and expand the appeal of the game. But Luduena should do well in Mexico. Good luck to him.
