View Full Version : That annoying comment: "for our international audience only"

Everytime Mike Hill mentions a soccer program or soccer match, he had to add the phase "for our international audience only". It makes me wish I could want to watch it. BUT NOOOOOOOOO! Since only have ESPN and ESPN2 on digial cable and not ESPN International and living in America, I'm not worthy of having that type of coverage at all. :(
OK, OK, sorry about the rant, but I had to get it off my chest. Any thoughts?
BTW I wish I was part of the international audience. :(

Yes, ESPN really pisses me off aswell. "Hey all you Americans watching this American company film this program in America - only people living outside America can watch it". I hate that Irish commentator aswell, he always says the most obvious things over and over again. How many times did he say Depor were missing Valeron last night. 20? 30? Max from FSW is better but I really miss Jonathan Pearce from the UK, he's a living legend. Infact we should do a poll for best commentator. Who is the Mexican/Brasilian commentator who shouts "goooaaaal" for 10 miutes at a time?

Kerpow, you are so right.
Tommy Smyth is the worst announcer ever. I think ESPN has him for his accent alone. He know nothing about soccer.

Those are annoying words, to be sure. But even more annoying is when they forget them, and then there are two or three threads on bigsoccer announcing "ESPN is showing two matches on Wednesday." It hasn't happened yet, but I'll bet you it does at some point.

Is ESPN Deportes entirely in Spanish?
Not that it matters, I mean, even if I don't understand it, the announcing is still probably better!!
I watched all of the World Cup on Univision.

The lead Champion's League Spanish voice for ESPN International is Omar Tapia, who you surely saw some on Univision. He's pretty good, no?

Yeah, he was really good and announced it like he actually gave a damn what was going on on the pitch. Also, the Univision broadcast had better picture quality.

The thing is, given the choice, no-one would watch ESPN abroad as American commentators suck. The CL in Britain is on ITV, which is bad enough, but it would be a lot better than ESPN.
This situation also presumes that football/soccer is an 'outsider' sport that no decent American wants to get in the way of baseball.

Personally I don't like baseball. But without FSW (with the exception of Univision and Telemundo), where would Americans like myself go for soccer/football/futbol coverage. BTW it's not only baseball is the sport that no "decent" American wants soccer to "get in the way": football (NFL) and basketball (NBA) also.

That would be Andreas Cantor. He is Argentine. He's under contract with Telemundo not Univision and that's why he did the soccer play by play for NBC during the Olympics -- in English. He also wrote a book on the history of the World Cup through 1994 entitled GOOOOOLLLLL! and is available in both original Spanish and translated English. Eventually, I'll make it through my Spanish copy. :)
Yeah, I agree with the thread starter. That is unfair teasing to the American audience.
