My wife heard it and said it was great. She was hoping that they would put a Frank Deford anti-soccer piece on right after it, so he could look like an even bigger pinhead than he usually does. Alas, Frank was nowhere to be found (and there's something I never thought I'd say).

Strangely enough, there was a Deford piece later on in the program. He was waxing poetic on the grandeur of Notre Dame's gridiron programme.

My mom and I heard the same story when I was taking her for chemo. Her comment was, "Who does that jerk think he is? I want to kick his butt." She was so upset she made me change the radio station.

Sachin, you should write in to NPR and tell tham that story. It would be funny to hear them read it on the radio

(NPR announcer type voice) "Sachin writes in to tell us the his mom wants to kick Frank Deford's Butt... Dear NPR My mother and I were driving along when............."

I too heard the broadcast. It was quite refreshing, since it was the same outfit that puts that old fart Frank Deford on air.

Wank DeFurd only kneeled down before the altar of Notre Dame football this week. Hah.

Garrison Keillor, FWIW, works for Public Radio International, not NPR.

Beside the so-called political stories/reports, I thought NPR did a good coverage on MLS. Better than those so-called national news (CBS, NBC and ABC).

Then again, since when does the CBS and ABC radio networks have anything but news and talk shows? And does NBC have a radio division anymore???

Sachin, you have a cool mom.

She does indeed rock. If she ever got mad a soccer match, she could, by herself, outshout both Celtic and Rangers fan at an Old Firm match.

Believe me, I know :D

Where do I send it? That's a great idea.

About a week or two before the World Cup started, a producer from PRI, based out of California I recall, called me to ask about the World Cup. We played phone tag initailly, and I was hoping they wanted to hear my "fan's perspective" for PRI. Unfortunately she wanted the names of soccer jouranlists who she could contact. I obliged her, and then awed he with my personal knowledge. She joked that she didn't need a journalist, but she didn't actually ask me to appear on her program the next day. Just a little story.....

Just curious, are you saying "urine bags" for effect or did that really happen? I was at a '97 qualifier in Azteca and the fans were very well behaved. I was under the impression that the urine bags were reserved for games at the Coliseum.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was there, too and it was raining garbage: Urine bags, fire works, small chunks of concrete from the stadium, napkin wads soaked in what looked like tobacco-spit. We had our own platoon of riot-police. They even paint-balled our bus as we drove by and pulled up next to us to yank the US flags out of our hands.

Classy fans in Mexico....

NPR has done several pieces on MLS as well as soccer. The network interviewed me a few years ago-- I think it was when Sunil Gulati was booted -- as well as for the 1998 World Cup. Mike has been on a few times.
It's a reminder of how far soccer still has to go when NPR does more on soccer and MLS than does ESPN Radio, the so-called broadcast partner of the league and the sport! There have been a few snippets but not much.

Here would be a good place to start.

Probably want to send it in to "All things Considered" maybe. Any NPR listeners know which show reads listener's messages on the air?
