quien gana? Nadie! NO one will win in this mess

What's an apertura or clausura tournament? is it half a tournament?

Let's say you have 20 teams in a league. In the first round a team plays 19 games (against every other team in the league). Is this what is normally called Apertura? and then the play the other 19 games. Is that clausura? or do they play all 34 games once (apertura) and then they play another 34 games (clausura) thanks.

It is like a regular European tournament. The Apertura ends when a team plays all the others once.

The Clausura the same. In one tournament you play local, in the next tournament away.

It is meant to give two chances to be champion. In long tournaments like in Europe, a team that started slow is most likely gone from the title race. But since Europe has more qualifying tournaments, like the UEFA Cup, it still makes the tournament interesting.

This is not the case in South America, hence the decision of the Argentine Football Federation - AFA.

Also, a tournament of 19 games leaves less space for a team to spread a considerable difference. Therefore, there is expectation til the end. The exception to the rule is Boca. They win it with several games to go. :D

Thanks for the info. But in such circumstances who's declared the champion for that season? if river wins the apertura and boca wins the clausura, do they play at the end to determine who the argentine champion for that year is? how do they choose the number one team for copa libertadores?

River won Torneo Clausura 03 (finished on july 7th) Boca won Torneo Apertura 03 (to be finished on december 23rd) no title dispute between them since there are two separate championships.

I believe the #1 team would be the Apertura and the # 2 the Clausura champion. Both are in the Liertadores, but there is no relevance when seedings are made. they call them by the numbering provided by AFA. The two teams with the highest combined points (Apertura & Clausura) that are not the Champions also participate in the Libertadores Cup.

And as for the champion ... there are two champions in a year. Just like in Mexico.

It is called that way because they follow the same cycle as the European schedule. Their champions for the following Libertadores are based on that.

Independiente was Champion of the Apertura last December and River won the Clausura earlier this year. The two of them will participate in the following Libertadores Cup as Champions. Boca will too as the reigning champ.

Boca is the 1st qualified for the Libertadores 2005 as Champion of the Apertura this year (won it last week).

first of all, Boca earned the right to play the Libertadores the moment they won the Cup, not because they just won the Apertura, they will be the defendant champions, as for the other argentine entries, they will be the teams with the most points between both tournaments.

Im sorry, I provided a link with a minimum mistake, but if you carefully see there are 3 tournaments listed in year 2002:

2002-Clausura RIVER PLATE

2002-Apertura INDEPENDIENTE

2002-Clausura RIVER PLATE

when the pattern is Clausura first and Apertura second:

1998-Clausura VELEZ SARSFIELD

1998-Apertura BOCA JUNIORS

1999-Clausura BOCA JUNIORS

1999-Apertura RIVER PLATE

2000-Clausura RIVER PLATE

2000-Apertura BOCA JUNIORS

2001-Clausura SAN LORENZO

2001-Apertura RACING CLUB

so if you say River won the Apertura 02 you're wrong, they won the Apertura 03.

I heard that Teves would be heading to Europe, he didn't play in the superclasico. Is this true?
