If T&T beat the US and we go into Mexico and get totaly waxed using replacement players would Arena resign?

From what I've read he was going to resign after, what he hopes, is a successful 2006 World Cup run. We have all surmised his next move but that would be predicated on a succesful run which WILL NOT happen with replacement players. Would he look to opt out of his contract early so as not to ruin his good run?

Although I predict we will pick up 4 points playing @T&T and @Mexico, it is quite possible that we will have 0 points. Will Arena resign? Of course not. What a wacky question! We've faced lots of adversity in qualifying in the past. Whatever happens, you can be sure of 2 things: (1) Arena will not resign, and (2) We will qualify for Germany 2006.

I find it just crazy that the USSF could let it come to this. It would be a shame to see progress halted.
There is to much at stake to let this thing come apart.

This is not Arena's battle. And he probably doesn't want to walk away from the dollars on this contract. He'll stick it out until after the Cup or until the qualification dream is dead. We could lose our first five games and still have a chance, so I expect Bruce to be around at least through the summer.

I can't think of a single reason why he would. Getting a result in Mexico would be tough even with our best line-up, so, really, the big letdown would be not getting any result in T&T.

So basically, your question boils down to: "Would he resign over one road loss with a lineup he never would have picked if it were up to him?"

WAAAAAAAAY out on a limb here.......I'm guessing........no.

The big qeustion is:

is arena on the players side or the ussf side??

since he needs the players to get the job done, I'd suspect he'd be pro-player...

now if ussf calls in scabs, I could easily see arena NOT crossing the PICKET line....

and says...ok ussf get some one else to coach your scabs, and when you settle with the real guys.et me know and I'll be back...

USA will NOT qualify with SCABS!!

there's a positive thing about the dispute ( between USSF & the Players ) , we'll see our talented youth players in the international stage, i for one, want to see Eskandarian, Gaven, Martino, Adu and some other youth players in Germany, how about you guys ?

The sources state that all players with either a cap or a camp call-up for the senior team will be locked out. So that excludes Gaven, Martino, and (I believe) Eskandarian. Basically you will see the U-20 team minus anybody you've ever heard associated with the senior team. They would get waxed against Mexico and would probably lose to T&T as well.

There are NO positive things about this dispute.

I have noticed several "off season, desperation, need something to talk about" threads like this. Should Arena resign if he loses a game without the regular Nat players? Who would the replacement players be? What happens if there is a giant deadly fart during the TT game?

It really is pathetic......

..........as I sit here reading ----------desperate for something to happen.

I will wager $500 that Bruce will not resign after the Mexico game in March 2004 and before the next scheduled US game.

Any takers?

if we're not quilified for 2006 WC, well, probably wait for another 4 yrs .... , anyway we have enough quality soccer to watch or read.

So if Arena refuses to cross a picket line, would Sampson coach the team?

Arena's hired to coach the team, not a certain group of players. If he walks out on this job, he's got nowhere to go but back to MLS or some lower division foreign team. It'd be career suicide, at least financially.

That is so not funny. Not even semi-funny. I could see Sigi getting the call since he's involved with the USSF now.

Isn't Arena under contract through 2006? He can't "cross the picket line" and coach the team. Unlike the players he has a contract and is obligated to honor that contract from all I understand. If he chose not to coach the game I would think that it could be seen as a breach in contract.

How can you say this? He is now a proven coach on the international level. At worse he would become another Bora. My guess is he would take some unexpected team to the WC finals in the future (like Greece this year at Euro).

Bruce is in the middle of all this crap and he will do his job in developing and fielding the best teams he can.

A thought......there is much talk of how any replacement players will be treated like dirt by the rest of the players after the fact. Has anybody thought about how Bruce might treat striking players in the future if it hurts us in the hex? If he thinks the PA lawyers are asking for too much then they might be the ones that are damned.

If they're unsuccessful with scab players, then Bruce isn't going to stick with them if they get the labor dispute settled with the regulars. So far their hasn't been one players sitting at the head of this dispute, at least not one that has been named probably for fear of being ostracized a little by the Fed, Bruce, fans, whoever. But Bruce won't let this effect his selections once this is settled, how can he? This thing covers anyone thats ever played one minute for the nats...

Am I wrong in assuming that most of the scabs would be guys most of us have never heard of? I find it highly unlikely that any of the young stars would play out of respect (and fear) for the full team. Nobody wants to be labeled as a scab for the rest of their career.

I agree. No player who expects to deal with the union in the future will want to be part of an ad-hoc team the federation decides to throw into the meat grinder.
