hypothetical situation

going into the 2004 season, don garber (in all his glory) decides that MLS should expand to 14 teams, because he wants to expand soccer's influence to those less fortunate souls (like people in montana, for example). here's the question: what 4 cities do you think they should drop a team in? here are my picks:

Seattle: been a huge soccer town for years now. plus could create a good pacific rivalry w/ SJ & LA.
Atlanta: Florida was a bust, but you need a team down south. might as well put it in one of the region's biggest cities. if that doesn't work, drop a team in the carolinas.
Houston: The Brimstone Cup is all well and good, but what Dallas really needs is another Texas squad for state bragging rights. If you watched the football game between the Cowboys and Texans, you'd know what I mean.
This leaves one more, most likely an eastern team. I would either pick Philly or Rochester. I know Philly is extremely close to the Mutts, but since those two towns hate each other, it would be fun to watch the games. On the other hand, the Rhinos are a very successful team (better than KC, i think). if they should get absorbed into MLS, they would bring in some $$$ from the Rochester fans, which would be good news for Donny G.

but that's my opinion.

All of them untapped markets just screaming for big-time soccer. Plus this way we hit each coast and the middle of the country get their fix, too. Sheer genius!

2 teams in kansas? in a twisted way, it just might work. and i like where you're going with the west virginia squad. just bring "cletus" mathis over from the mutts and you've got both the franchise AND the mascot in one shot. beautiful.

some other cities that are deserving:
St. Louis - bigger soccer town than KC, but it's lamar hunt; what can you do?
Detroit - especially w/ the new field. As long as they don't play eminem on the PA system.
Twin Cities - don't laugh - they played outdoors in the NASL. plus you've got the mall of america and jesse ventura. who could ask for a better deal?
Phoenix - b/c the fields don't get hot enough in JULY.
Vegas - Sin city, baby. great for hooligans.
Butte, MT. - told you we need to represent big sky country.
and finally,
Providence - i know we already have the Revs. i just needed to give props to RI. in fact, we wouldn't really mind taking the revs off the krafts' hands - we'd love ANY pro team in our backyard.

Those cities are all good, but I got a little place in my heart for the city that builds a soccer stadium.

perhaps he was referring to the wizards? technically, missouri. but you know that name -- Kansas City -- is a tricky one.

Ya, that was the only angle that I could think of with the Wiz. Hopefully eventually they will build that stadium in JoCo, Kansas.

yes, i know arrowhead stadium is in Mizzou. However, Kansas City is in both states (why, i'll never know), and secondly, the team name refers to the Wizard of Oz (as in "i don't think we're in kansas anymore"). that's where the 2nd kansas team is. i didn't think people would hafta have a debate over my choice of words, but whatever...
