After seven years working as a misguided saviour of animals in fear of exertion, Given has decided he's no longer prepared to spend his days bailing out slack or splay Newcastle defenders and wants to go to a club that will look after his needs for a change. A move to Manchester United has been mooted, as has a switch to set-piece kings Arsenal.
I usually laugh at their sardonic comments, but this one made me want to cry.
Though set-piece kings does have a nice ring to it.

There is absolutely no chance of Shay Given leaving St James' Park and nobody has contacted us about him," said Shepherd.
"He is not for sale and that's the end of the story."
Given also distanced himself from the reports.
"I am baffled by these reports because I have not spoken to anyone," he said.
"I am as frustrated as anyone by our lack of success but I want to stay and win things with Newcastle."

Sounds like he's gone
I've been predicting that Given wouldn't be here after the season. Maybe it's time for Souey to get in touch with Brad Friedel...
Thx,
Jay!

We can not sell Given. He is a Geordie boy through and through. Souness needs to offload some of the crap at St James' Park before he even contemplates selling the best goalkeeper in the Premier League imo. :) :) :)

Keegan tried to buy Brad Friedel in the late 90's. The deal fell through because he couldn't get a work permit. :) :) :)

Right. From nufc.com. It's usually spot on.
Keeper conundrum - Souness speaks
"Shay (Given) came to see me about the reports that appeared on Tuesday and he was deeply mystified and concerned by them.
"He even asked me if it was the club trying to get rid of him - and I assured him it certainly wasn't!
"Shay Given is a top quality goalkeeper and we want him to stay here. I'm told he loves it here and the fans love him, so we want that to remain the case."
The words of the manager commenting on media claims that Shay Given was set to exit SJP to join either Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester United - depending on which version of the story you read.
However, Wednesday's Guardian wrote a story that first reared its head within minutes of Souness taking the Newcastle job:
Brad Friedel of Blackburn Rovers is the man Newcastle United would turn to should the goalkeeper Shay Given leave the club.
Newcastle's chairman Freddy Shepherd said yesterday that Given "is not for sale and that's the end of the story", but he made similar comments about Jonathan Woodgate before he was sold to Real Madrid.
Friedel, 34, was signed for Blackburn by Graeme Souness and the new Newcastle manager is having to plan in case of Given's departure.
Souness, already under pressure from fans just over three months after succeeding Sir Bobby Robson, yesterday cancelled the players' Christmas party, an indication of the tumbling temperature on Tyneside. It would get colder still if Given left. Manchester United are monitoring Given's situation, as are Arsenal, but there has been no bid as yet.

The deal fell through because he couldn't get a work permit. :) :) :)Liverpool had their sights on him since '92, when Souey was in charge there, but Roy Evans was the gaffer when Big Bad Brad got the WP in January '98. I've had this feeling that Brad would be coming to Newcastle as soon as Graeme took over. Looks like it will be happening.
Thx,

Souness seems to like taking all of Rangers' good players so Stefan Klos wouldn't be a bad replacement if Given leaves.

Given is going nowhere my Scottish friend.
