I was told that the half size is designed for increased width only and not length (maybe a tiny little bit longer 0.5cm)

e.g. I was tryign on boots and tried on some size 11 and the length was pretty good the width was tight but the instep was very tight so the dude at the store told me to try on half size bigger 11.5 i said nah its kool fearing that the increased length would create heel slip which i don't want but he said the half size is virtually the same length but just a wider fit..

Is this true?

Well, yes, what he said is true, as the difference in length a half-size is negligible, 5mm, which given the variations between companies etc can be the thickness of a sock, more or less.

You'da have nothing to lose by trying on the extra .5 size up, the worst'd be if they were too short and u could at least rule them out.

Rule for EVERYTHING in shopping, take as much time trying on and asking questions about everything you want. The bods in shops live to help you, why else would they be in such mediocrely paid employ! They'll thank you for giving purpose to their lives and meaning to their day.
On a serious note, ALWAYS ask about "staff-and-half" discount, many employee's can easily get away with putting thru. things at staff rate to their relatives and spouse;s, so technically it'd be discrimination not to discount to Joe Bloggs. But it's not worth getting arsey with strangers, as they'll see no reason to assist in ur penny-pinching, instead it's quite equitable to offer them half-back in return for the discount, so if the can get u 20% off £100 then offer them £10 back, hence they've got a £10 for their troubles (which if done correctly cannot be seen as illegal on their behalf) and you saved a £10 also. Obviously many peeps can't do this, or ain't willing to take the risk, and u gotta understand it's not worth them risking their livelyhood for a stranger, but I've found it works many times, it helps if u genuinely nice and get on with the sales person, but u can build friendships and financial relationships this way.
