I want to confirm whether Alloa Athletic FC played in English non-league before joining Scottish Football League?

Thanks for your reply...

No, they didn't. You might be thinking of Gretna.

Gretna played in some league called the Dr. Martens league I think and joined the Scottish League just over 2 years ago when Airdrie went tits up.

Alloa have always played in Scotland, they'd have a quite a way to travel if they played in England.

Gretna played in the Northern League (which, in passing, is the world's second oldest league, after the English Football League); they were then promoted to the Northern Premier League.

Doctor Martens were the sponsors of the Southern Football League, whose teams come from the south and midlands of England and south Wales.

You learn something every day.:)

Are teams in these leagues able to make it to the English League?

Yes, they are both in the pyramid. The Southern League is higher up than the Northern League, however.

A Northern League team would have to get promoted to the Northern Premier League (now usually referred to by its sponsor's name - the Unibond League), then through both divisions of the Northern Premier League, then the Conference North, then the Conference.

I think that's a minimum of five promotions needed.

The Southern League feeds directly into the Conference South. It is on the same level as the top division in the Northern Premier League.
